I absolutely hate it when my favourite songs are covered, you might understand my horror when I switched on Sky News this morning to some young fella singing U2's With Or Without You! Argh, anyone else hear it?

No, not yet.

Some covers are good though.
Some are good. I think my favourite cover is Mad World by Gary Jules. Very morose but brilliant at the same time.

i think that there are songs that should never be covered because the original cannot be bettered......but i guess its more of an opinion than a fact as to if a song can be bettered or not
Joe Cocker....With a Little Help From My Friends. Brilliant.
Atomic Kitten ...Eternal Flame ....terrible
Father & Son....Boyzone... scandalous!!
some covers work.
Roxy Music - Jealous Guy
Prelude - After the Goldrush

others don't.
AllSaints - Under the Bridge
Tainted Love was a good cover. I like David Greys version of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.
there are some precious songs that should never be touched.. but there are songs that I've loved, and then found out they weren't the originals!
Tom Jones - Kiss............ NO!
I've just discovered that Susan Boyle has covered 'Our Tune'........:o(

Still, it may be a more sedate version for us to propel us around the dancefloor when all those 'important' anniversaries occur; kinder to the hip-replacements, possibly?
its sometimes good to see another take on the same song, some cover versions are excellent.
Rocky, Back in the late fifties/ early sixties, my mates and I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg on our " tranny " radios. They used to play all the latest American hits ( Donna, Only sixteen, etc. ).
These, and many more were very quickly ' covered ' by british artists. The covers were very rarely anywhere near as good as the orgional, but they were given more air time, and seemed to be 'pushed' onto the record buying public.
If Answerbank had been around at this time, I would have posted exactly the same as you.
Having had my rant now, I must also say that there is one cover that I think is better than the original -------- Joe Cocker's 'With a little help from my friends'.
Mushroon25, Roxy Music - Jealous Guy. that's the first one that sprung to mind having just read the question.

There are a few covers that are as good if not better than the originals, but there are tunes for me that are sacred, With or Without You because it is just brilliant, well to me anyways and Careless Whisper by George which in my opinion could not be bettered. Almost forgot Fix you by Coldplay.

The only cover of a song that I've preferred to the original is U2's Where The Streets Have No Name by The Chimes, but it was completely changed and didn't try to copy the original.
Not heard it but I agree with rocky, there are some songs that just cannot be covered IMHO. For me, some that have worked and in some cases have been better than the originals are Your Song, covered by Ewen McGregor, Born To Run, covered by Frankie GTH, Waltzing Matilda covered by Rod Stewart and Skinny Love, covered by Birdy.
Elvis Costello covered George Jones' "Good Year For The Roses" and Charles Aznavour's "She" both excellently IMHO

It must be a real kicker for the original artist if their song is covered and is more successful than theirs.
