I've hundreds of old dance 12" that I'd like to have on CD and then transfer to my iPod, can it be done (at home), what do I need and how much will it cost?

Thanks!

Connect the cable from your decks into your pc in the same way as if you were mixing through your pc. You can buy adapters to help you achieve this from Maplins or similar electrical shops. Then use a sound recorder on your pc to record the incoming music. Alternatively just download the mp3s off of the net.

At the end of the day your making an illegal copy by recording it onto your pc. Might as well download a much better sounding recording from the net. You already have bought the vinyl so if it were my i wouldn;t feel guilty about downloading, having already spent 7 or 8 on a one or two track vinyl in the first place!

I'm pretty sure that recording a sound from an official vinyl that you own onto a computer is not making an "illegal" copy. If it was, programs like Windows Media Player that let you copy or "rip" tracks from a CD onto your PC wouldn't be allowed (as it's essentially the same thing).

When you purchase music, either digitally, or via a recording stored on a tape, CD, music DVD or vinyl, you aren't buying the music itself, but rather the right to play it and listen to it privately. So, if I rip tracks from the audio out onto a MiniDisc player via an optical link (which used to be the only way to home record MiniDiscs) it's completely legal, so long as the music is for my own private listening and I'm not going to sell it, or upload it to others on the net.

Sorry to have changed the subject.

There's a excellent article about copying vinyl to PC here - I followed it last year to copy my 12" records and with a bit of tweaking here and there (especially with the Line In volume) it worked a treat.

Sorry, that link doesn't work properly - there's a < /P> at the end of the url - simply delete that and try again, or copy and paste the link into a new browser window. The page definitely exists!
I'm not saying its illegal - just saying that it would be much easier and better quality to download it. And i wouldn;t feel like i;ve ripped people off as i would have already spent a fortune buying some vinyl in the  first place
