Personally I saw George Thorogood at Dingwalls (showing my age) and rate that the best for me. The only band I ever saw who could actually play as well live as their records was The Beautiful South. Stage presence was low, but attention to musical detail was admirably high.

As a freelance music writer who has watched live bands for the last thirty years, I have seen a fair few, and would consider Bruce Springsteen the finest thing I've ever seen on a concert stage. Not far behind are Pink Floyd, and for personal excitement, Tom Petty's first ever tour as support to Nils Lofgren pushed my buttons big time!
I also have seen a lot of very good acts, but I recently saw David Bowie, and to put it mildly he was absolutely awe-inspiring. I was never a huge fan, in that I quite liked his music but very much not a devotee. My wife, who had very little experience of him at all, was also blown away. Technically he was superb, had great stage presence, played a good mix of classics and new stuff, which was excellent even at first listen, and clearly enjoyed himself immensely. The best by a long way!!
I'll opt for a top three not in amy order. Pink Floyd (seen outdoors in paris a stunning visual display), Garth Brooks (seen at the King's Hall Belfast a great backing group and singer who put his heart and soul into the performance) and Level 42 (seen at the Concert hall Glasgow and outstanding Bass player Mark King gave a fine performance)
Don't expect many people to agree with me but many of these acts are based on one charismatic person, particularly Queen. The rest of the band being a bunch of non-entities. I have to take my hat off to Status Quo, a bunch of real characters who give it their all on a seemingly never-ending tour schedule. Showing my age now (if the Quo thing didn't already!), the band that really blew me away live were the Beach Boys. The sounds that they produced on stage were beautiful. No gimmicks, no pretentiousness, just perfect harmonies that stayed with me for ever.
