hi fellow parents - wonder if anyone can help

I have 2 sons - 13 and 6 - because of the age difference they tend to have different interests.

Hubby is fairly sporty and an outdoors type where as I am a bit of a home bod, not sporty and not so outgoing.

We have got to the stage where hubby does everything with our 13 yr old and i do all with our six year old. It,s because my 6 year old is still at the stage where a nice country walk or rockpooling on the beach appeals to him and i enjoy these also. Our 13 year old enjoys going to football matches, rock climbing, tennis etc as does hubby.

While I would do these things with him, realistically, it would not be a shared interest we would enjoy for years to come and although we do a lot as a family I have just read a book that says '' do something with each of your children that you will both do together in 10, 20,50 years time.''( I remember my dad taught me chess when I was seven and we continued to enjoy games unitil he died, when i was in my thirties).

I am looking for ideas of things I can start with 13 year old now so that we have common ground now and in the future.

Thank you in advance

What about chess, if it is something you enjoy, he will sense your enthusiasm and want to join in.

Another thing that springs to mind is golf, you don't necessarily need to be that sporty to enjoy it and with the handicap system everyone can play against each other on a level playing field. You play into old age, there are courses everywhere and you could take lessons together.
