Speed Cameras.....

Why do people spout such venom about speed cameras. I doubt that any critic of them would feel charitable if one of their loved ones were killed by a speeding motorist. Hypocritical

They are sited to maximise revenue and have virtually no impact on the people who kill by excessive speed - the young/inexperienced/drunk.
The only cameras that should be deployed are 'average speed' cameras - to control speed through roadworks and similar temporary hazards.
And I f*cking resent being called a hypocrite ...

Speed cameras are to slow cars down on bits of road known to be hazardous.
The Police set us a speed trap.
If you go past it, you flash at other motorists, to warn them.
So, they slow down, before entering the hazardous bit of road.
You are helping the Police to achieve their stated objective.
They should thank all the motorists who flash to warn other drivers.
And yet, the a police get annoyed.
I don't understand.

'Speed kills' - no it doesn't - inappropriate speed kills.
30mph in thick fog outside a school is legal (according to a speed camera) but is a killer.
40mph on the same road in broad daylight at 6am is illegal (according to a speed camera) but can be perfectly safe.
The problem with cameras (apart from the "revenue raising through ridiculous positioning" issues) is that they are blunt/useless instruments when it comes to properly addressing road safety - which depends on a multitude of factors - of which speed is only one.

The statics are off ummmm - but the nasty sneaky "hiding in hedgerows and ignoring their code of conduct" speed stasi are still plying their trade.
No signs, no warnings, nothing - so how can that be 'encouraging safe driving'.
And no, I haven't been caught - because I don't routinely speed either on the bike or in the car.
My objection to cameras is that the justification for them is totally flawed and a fraud on the motoring public.
You should target the drunks, target the young/inexperienced, target the school-run-mummies-on-mobiles - but don't pretend that you are doing much for road safety with cameras - you're not.

I've never been an advocate of warning signs for speed cameras. I think that the cameras should be hidden. Speed limits are not put in place to make money; they are for safety reasons. It bemuses me how so many people in society are so blase about speeding, as if it doesn't matter. Are there any ABers who can honestly say that, should one of their loved ones be knocked down by a speeding motorist, they would not berate that driver for speeding?
