No the Twitter case does pose some interesting legal issues for all sites that Chat or are an exchange of views like here. Libel laws should equally apply - the issue I guess here is the need for laws "sans frontier" for the Web........

In the Council's case, they must have blown a fair penny in taking action in San Mateo, CA, which is home to Paolo Alto and Silicon Valley.

No I agree Ed has no controil off site, but when it starts or is resultant of being onsite then they do...and they could see action being taken to reveal the IP address/e-mail.

For the record, only a very select few of you (less than 5) know who I am and have my personal e-mail. And it has been done through dummy e-mails to set up the connection. It's a shame as I do find most of you to incredibly nice, amusing and compassionate and it would be great to be freer with sharing e-mails.

there are forums and chat places much worse than answerbank, the key I suppose is to limit the amount of personal detail you publish on the site and be certain you trust the person you divulge info to.

the site moderation should keep nastiness to a minimum

If you saw fit to give real-life details to a 'select few'.........and are now suffering the consequences, I'm afraid that you are pointing the finger of blame in entirely the wrong direction...
