Why does Britain need to dish out a further £52m worth of aid on top of the £13million donated by Britons to the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal launched only a week ago, plus the annual amount we already give in aid to Africa, and the amount we are obliged to donate via The United Nations.?

How much are the wealthy countries of Africa giving from their Gold and Diamond mines?

NJ you have confirmed all that i thought about whilst looking through the responses, and as to whoever said something about education early on, is wrong. Education is always advocated in the western world as the way forward, to a better life, no we don't have drought, not in that way, but surely if people are better educated, perhaps they will be able to solve some of the more pressing problems for themselves. Birth control should surely be on the agenda, no one can sustain life in many of these places, as said, and carrying on having more babies many of whom will perish seems cruel.
Giving money over the many years, by whichever method, government, charities, doesn't seem to have made a major impact on many people's lives in Africa. I am not suggesting that Britain doesn't help, but endless streams of cash, how much actually goes to help those most in need. It is everyone's choice or not to give aid, Britain donates as do many nations, but that isn't the only answer, because if it was, they wouldn't be in this situation.

Either way Gromit they are still spending on military hardware instead of feeding their own people.
This has always been the problem in certain parts of Africa.
I don't begrudge us and other nations helping them out but it's their own Governments who are to blame,they should prioritise their spending.
This has been going on for years.

After the second world war when this country was bankrupt our people were living in awful conditions, do you think we stopped spending on defence? To repeat your link yet again, the $5.3 billion was spent on health, water and sanitation. They are prioritising, but a drought is an act of god which cannot be averted by money, only the suffering it causes can.
