Why does Britain need to dish out a further £52m worth of aid on top of the £13million donated by Britons to the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal launched only a week ago, plus the annual amount we already give in aid to Africa, and the amount we are obliged to donate via The United Nations.?

How much are the wealthy countries of Africa giving from their Gold and Diamond mines?

// I see this Gromit and I know what you mean, but name calling a generation as being unhelpful is a bit wide of the mark, isn't it? //

Sorry, I thought you were attributing that at me. I don't believe it is a generational thing, I know plenty of twenty somethings who think we should stop aid.
I am at a loss how you can generalize this Trigger, could our economic sate at present have just a little to do with people feeling that way??
me too Gromit, I was actually referring to a comment Triggs made about the older generation being more about money
2004-2005 which was down to the last government, that figure wasn't mean, how can you even think that. I haven't got my calculator to hand, but that is still a large amount of money.
As to be obsessed with cost, that is misleading, people on this site must be from same criteria, all backgrounds, ages, walks of life, you don't know them, nor do you know what or who they might donate to, labelling older people as tight fisted because a few have a different opinion, seems rather insensitive.
or of being a different age too em?
Gromit,I wonder how your mind works, there are a lot of very sensible people on this thread who are asking very reasonable questions.Let me ask the main question once again, although I am so sorry for the plight of the peoples of Africa why does the media time & time again keep asking for aid to help these poor victims when it would appear that nothing is done to find out where the enormous sums of cash are actually going to because it seems to me that the suffering are not getting any & the western world is getting fed up with supplying money to pompous African leaders.Ron.
It's my choice who i give money to, there is little enough of it, so it goes to a few charities in Britain. The government can give all it likes, but the taxpayers don't have a choice.

You pointed out that 2004-05 we only gave a third of what we give now. We can afford is less now than we could in 2004, yet we pay more, so the 2004 figure was miserly.

You appear to be getting two different lots of aid mixed up.
Government aid, from the tax payer is what AOG is objecting to. The Government were elected by saying they would not cut aid, and they haven't and are spending it. They were elected by more votes so there is nothing you can do if you object to the policy. You can let us know on AB but that is largely futile.

The media asking for aid is entirely voluntary. If you do not want to give any - don't.

Please also do not waste your time in wondering how my mind works. And writing it one a post comes across as personal and rude.
Triggerhippy has it escaped your notice we are in a mega recession here, and I can only speak for myself ,I do care for people, I care a great deal be it here or abroad but unfortunately my income doesn't stretch to all causes, I wish it did
Britain is a so called wealthy nation, so they keep on telling us, how is it then i couldn't get decent treatment for an elderly relative in hospital, nor indeed since. That is what makes me annoyed about billions in aid going to many countries, and rarely does someone make a point how many elderly in Britain have hardship and privation. The odd case on TV about hospitals, or care homes, but not very often. By all means give aid, but time we took stock of the many problems we have at home.

Actually, we are not in recession. We came out of recession 18 months ago. The Government is spending the tax it has brought in so it won't really affect you much either way personally. A tax cut would be nice, but unlikely.
so TH all of people around your age group feel like this?

we have been throwing disgusting amounts of money at the NHS for 14 years. Whatever the problem was with the hospital care, it wasn't because money was diverted to Africa.
I didn't say it was diverted, i said its time someone sorted out the problems we have here before we send billions more.
Sorry to break into this thread like this but there seems to bean age war occurring here, could I ask what your real ages are tiggerhippy and bobbisox as this is the internet and you probably might find you're roughly the same age which then makes this younger/older divide irrelevant.
