Why does Britain need to dish out a further £52m worth of aid on top of the £13million donated by Britons to the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal launched only a week ago, plus the annual amount we already give in aid to Africa, and the amount we are obliged to donate via The United Nations.?

How much are the wealthy countries of Africa giving from their Gold and Diamond mines?

TH Seeing as how it's many of the older generation who have kept this country going since i don't know when, that seems a bit rich. And what makes you think its just the young ones that care, sorry don't buy that at all. Those who give come from all age groups, backgrounds, just because some on here don't necessarily believe we should just keep doling out money at the drop of a hat. Britain gives billions in aid, to many countries and has been doing so for a very long time, and if you look at many of the countries that have been given aid, they don't seem that much better off.
Actually Triggs, not all older people are money obsessed, I'm 50 and I'd quite cheerfully have my tax hoiked by £20 a week if it'd curb some more of both this country's and other country's ills. My MIL is in her 70's and she donates and volunteers as well, so don't judge everyone by some of the folk on here, but I agree on here there does seem to be a trend.

errmm, can you say that hand on heart Triggs..LOL

anyway back to the topic in question

I don't think there is a quick fix answer to this dreadful problem, if there was the world would be a much nicer place
NOX, thank God someone is saying it as it is
From an article in the Guardian
Total UK aid is due to be £9.1bn by 2010-11 with spending in sub-Saharan Africa projected to be £3.4bn – nearly three times 2004-05 levels.

// if you feel the need to help then go and do it, I don't see anyone disagreeing with this? //

But we have jobs and we cannot go and do it. Which is why we don't mind our Government using our taxes to help on our behalf.

This whole thread is about not everyone agreeing with what the Government are doing. But the Government published a manifesto which that aid would not be cut, and the got the most votes. You are welcome to disagree with the Government, but you are wasting your time. Maybe in 4 years time you can try to vote them out
I see this Gromit and I know what you mean, but name calling a generation as being unhelpful is a bit wide of the mark, isn't it?

Thanks for pointing out we were mean with our aid in 2004-05.
All I'm trying to say is they are more than capable of looking after themselves but refuse to do it.
Not bothering with the news section again..Think I'll stick to sport.
Cheerio
WBA it does get a bit heated but if we can respect the other posters, it can be enjoyable

I am mystified by that remark. Where have I done that?
I don't think you did, gromit - trigs' remark at 16.08 seems to be the one referred to. I think this is getting a bit personal - can we all get back to the gist of the OP please?
for your information Triggs, between us we pay a sizable amount of tax each month, about £300 to be precise, I am all for that and have no problems with some of our money going to foreign aid but because I choose to donate each month to a Cancer Charity, does this make me any worse of a person?
you didn't Gromit :-)

Sorry, I hope it wasn't my comments that have driven you off. But you did post a mistake, and I just corrected it. I don't believe I have been rude or uncivil, just I was giving a counter view.
Gromit I don't think you are any of those things, you discuss well imo
