For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Lottie - we were told shops were for shopping in "only at weekends when out of uniform" - I often wondered why too........... my red cardigan was frowned upon beacause it was a "hand-me-down" and had buttons up to the neck instead of a V neck. I got a real telling off and sobbed all the way home as it wasn't my fault!
My son dyed his blonde hair red when that 'curtains' hair style was in fashion. He was 14/15 at the time. It faded off to pink. He did get told off at school by his house master (boarding school) and told to wash it off. Of course it didn't wash out, it had to grow out. Nothing more was said though.
Simple answer YES.
Schools are set up to homogenise and destroy individuality and to put out nice obedient little sheep into the world. Good luck to the family, I hope they win their case and Regan gets to carry on expressing his freedom of choice.
As for "...or be thrown into remedial classes with unruly pupils" I don't believe for a minute that any school would do that simply because of a child's appearance, looks like typical Daily Bogroll fact twisting as per.

Quite true in many cases. We chose a school for our son (he was included in the decision) that actively encouraged individuality and also encouraged respect between teachers and pupils and a community spirit. Boarding school with mixed boarding houses (not mixed dorms!!!). Best decision we ever made. They did have uniforms though ;o)

"Either ...
(1) All parents agree on everything (unlikely), or
(2) The school ceases to exist. "
I disagree. In society we should make choices about the rules we set up - obviously we can't chop and change them at the drop of a hat. We need to make a working decision on who is wrong and who is right (or, in some cases - but not all - what the compromise is), but that decision should be informed partly by evidence and partly by reason. If there's nothing actively justifying uniforms - i.e. if they don't do what they're intended to do - than that simply isn't a good enough grounds to keep them.

So Doc, you just accept every rule and regulation you come across in life whether at school in the work place, etc. How do you think life has progressed over the centuries and we life as we do now - basically because people have questionned and thought about things which has created the changes. Would you like to go back to the school system of 100 years ago, because that is basically what you are saying?
As for calling the child "scrote of a son"!!!! Do you know him, does his hairstyle indicate that he deserves to be called 'a scrote'?
And people are justified to have their own opinions without being accused of speaking "old twaddle".
