/// Islamic Sharia law will be the ‘basic source’ of legislation in free Libya, its new leader has proclaimed. ///

/// It could also prove deeply embarrassing to David Cameron as he ordered the £1billion mission to back the rebels despite advice from all sides urging caution. ///

Did I hear someone shout "I TOLD YOU SO"?

You said it all Ankou.
cheers brenden, glad i got through.
That was not a compliment Ankou, you bypassed the question.
well you asked me a question and i answered it directly. hardly bypassing.

so we should insist that the libyans let us go over there and build churches and cathedrals for the libyan people then ?
I'm struggling to understand some people's perception of what is right, do we want countries to happily accept the cultures of those coming to live in that country, or do we want robustly conservative countries that insist any visitors play by their rules. Some people seem to want both and neither at the same time!
My understanding of Sharia Law is very limited so I won't pass judgement, I would have though though that it's not the completely rigid law that we're being made to assume.
Just as in neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt, Islamists have emerged from yet another Arab Spring uprising as the most powerful group in the country. How far they will go will be decided at the ballot box — in Tunisia this week, in Egypt in November and in Libya within eight months.

National Transitional Council leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil said Sunday that Islamic Sharia law would be the main source of legislation, that laws contradicting its tenets would be nullified, and that polygamy would be legalized.

that last part, doesn't really bode well for women i suspect.
It's an Arab country of course they're going to want Arab law written into their constitution.

that doesn't mean there are going to be stonings in the street any more than there are in Egypt or Tunisia.

Note he says "basic source" not introduction of - he's implying that there won't be a strict interpretation of Sharia - which is good news
If they democratically opt to go that path, then that is their choice. If they later conclude it wasn't the best option then hopefully they will have the ability to make changes at that time. Hopefully peacefully. All cultures are in transition. It usually takes a while to remove religious influence from a government.
We don't know anything about that yet, exactly what they'll do is up to them.

We have already far exceeded our brief for interfering in Lybia

As I recall it was just meant to be protecting civillians.

I don't think the Arab league had killing Gadaffi in mind when they voted for that resolution

Or is it irrelevant what arab countries actually want ?
It isn't irrelevant what they want, but polygamy doesn't suit women, only men. If they make it law, then the repercussions for women do not bear thinking about.
most everyday arabs cannot afford two women, even in saudi.
its not a requirement, merely permissable.
it has nothing to do with what it costs, its the fact that many do it. Often against the women's will. If you are widowed, its looked upon as something shameful, better to be in a marriage with a polygamous man, than be on your own, without a man's protection, or so i read.
"its the fact that many do it"

really ? where do you get that fact from ? i'd like to see it.
Anyway we'll have to wait and see

But did you see the apalling piece of Mail-ism that page?

The box that says "Islamists set for power in Tunisia"

then in smaller text "A once banned moderate islamic party...."

Notice they decided against titling the box "Moderates set for power in Tunisia"

They really do treat their readership as if they are simply too stupid to see what they're doing - it as if they're not even trying to hide it any more.

At this rate they'll start drawing a little Satan pentacle every time they use the word muslim
lol
for people who despise the paper why quote it so often.

It is marvellous how some of the 'Anti-Daly Mail Brigade' will scrutinise ever word their dreaded newspaper prints, to try and come up with something that they think fits their own particular agenda.

Do they think everyone is thick, even if one uses the Mail's great links, they are far from thick, perhaps it's those others, who would wish to belittle them.

Almost the first line of the report said,

/// Islamic Sharia law will be the ‘basic source’ of legislation in free Libya, its new leader has proclaimed.///

Closely followed by.

/// The sudden lurch by a country seen as very moderate towards Islamic extremism will alarm many in the West who supported the ousting of Colonel Gaddafi.///

No 'appalling piece of Mail-ism' there just the facts, but still some don't like to witness the facts when they are printed for all to see, they would rather see them brushed under the carpet, out of sight.
permitting polygamy and creating new bank regulations to ban charging interest is extremism ?
The Daily Mail, and indeed Mr Jabril, are slightly premature with this. Mr Jibril is unlikely to be leading Libya after elections take place.
Who knows what will happen.
MAny devout Moslems in Libya have been prevented from practising their religion in the Gaddafi years and that aspect must be taken into account when assessing what Mr Jibril is saying.

In particular I'm interested in the following words of wisdom from the DM:
"The sudden lurch by a country seen as very moderate towards Islamic extremism..."
"Seen as very moderate, eh". That statement would intrigue a lot of "ordinary Libyans"
It now turns out that Gadaffi was sexually assaulted by being buggered with a iron bar shortly before he was executed.

Our new friends seem a bit dubious. Let's hope our £millions invested in this mob is repayed in oil jobs for British workers.
