/// In an email said to be from Ms Fear, she wrote: "I need to be very clear here, and in order to make this work, we have to remove any references to sex (including buggary (sic)) and any swear words, including 'bloody' I'm afraid. I would also like the references to Poland, Jews and Nazis removed too please.///
She would have a heyday with some of Will's stuff.

Since WWII is a violent, brutal, subject matter 'Disneyfying' it would be an insult to those who lived and died throughout it- I am personally more offended by that than by any reference to the invasion of Poland or swearing.
She should read ' Bent' or 'Good' if she thinks that war is something silly and flippant that can be sanitised.

It was part of a 'pageant' about the castle's history primarily to entertain, secondly to educate.
And for an audience that could include young children and visitors from all over the world who had bought into a visit - not a play about the war.
I think the manager who commissioned the work had every right to tone it down if she thought it would better suit its purpose and audience.
She will be judged on visitor figures not by theatre critics.

"English Heritage does not 'sanitise history' as anyone who looks at our guidebooks and the interpretation at the sites in our care will see. Visitors to Pendennis Castle get a comprehensive history of the site. It's just that Mr Tinson's play was not what we had in mind for our Halloween ghost tour."
seems reasonable.

maybe steve, but if i asked someone to write a me a christmas play and they handed something that was all about god and jesus i'd tell them thanks but no thanks.
as i sad above how can we really say what was so 'bad' other than what this article tells us (which sems to be mostly from tinson) but if she is guilty of anything then that would be choosing the wrong playwright, or not being clear enough on her requirements in the 1st place.
from what i undestand the play included nazis inflicting buggary (sic) on polish jews.

<<if you commision a work about WWII, are you seriously going to be surprised if they mention Jews, the Holocaust, fighting or the invasion of Poland?>>
It wasn't
<<The play featured scenes from different periods in the Tudor castle's history, including its role during the Second World War as a key coastal defence against German invasion of Britain>>
Seems like this minor editorial disagreement is being inflated into something it's not.
