Can anyone speculate as to why they'd find it necessary to beat up and old lady?

People who commit these crimes react entirely in the moment, they do not indulge in forethought, or put any mental effort into pondering the consequences of what they do. That requires a level of intelligence which these people simply do not posses.
If something frustrates or angers them, their response is to lash out. That is the normal reaction of us all - it's instinctive, but as babies and toddlers, we are taught that this is not appropriate behaviour, and we grow and understand society around us, we learn to respect other people, and their possessions.
For ferral individuals like this, such filters have never been put in place, because thewir parents never understood enough to put them there, so the circle goes on and on and on.
If and hopefully when they are caught and someone asks them why they did this, they will look blank and answer that they do not know. Tragically, this is the correct answer.

Possibly. We don't know that though. They may be perfectly capable of understanding what they're doing, but just incredibly cruel and vicious.

ludwig - you may be right, but I hope that it is a sense of incomprehension that makes people behave this way. The alternative is that this behaviour is thought out and deliberate, and that is just too horrible to contemplate, although I entirely accept it as a point - as i do naomi's point about power.
Inequacy is a dreadful aspect of modern society which needs to be addressed through nursery and primary education, so don't hold your breath!

Andy, these basds know what they are doing there is no getting away from that, would they try this on with a fit person? I think not, I remember years ago the Isle of Man had the birch, there was never no trouble, a local bloke from our area was one of the last to have been birched until he took it to the H.R.In strasbourg, what happened? I dont think I need to answer that.
Well.........I have been led to believe in previous threads on violent societies that this generation is no more violent than previous generations.
So it looks as though we have always been beating up old ladies.
I have also been led to believe that violence breeds violence and that banning corporal punishment in schools will ameliorate violence.
I have seen no evidence of this.

It is a bit odd. No sign of forced entry to the home, nothing stolen, no sexual assault mentioned, very violent attack, including nearly severing a finger.
What offender profile fits that ? Seems like someone who thinks she has cash and who goes berserk when she won't tell him where it is,probably because she hasn't got any. Who would think that? Someone who's heard rumours or knows she has had cash and thinks she still has; he wouldn't go round a town picking homes at random on the off chance that a) an old lady has cash worth taking b) she'll open the door or leave it open and c) then exacting angry vengeance when she hasn't.
It'll probably be someone whom she knows. Wonder if her young descendants have any dodgy friends?
