/// This petition reached that 100,000 within a week, with the resulting debate in the House of Commons today taking place. We will at last be giving voice to the widespread public concern. ///

Was this debate long overdue, and will we finally see some positive action taken, to alleviate this long ongoing problem?

the level of net migration is said to be unsustainable, based on a level of assessed required additional infrastructure, and the current levels of government borrowing.

against that, the UK pension system is nothing more than a glorified "ponzie", without more workers to support those baby boomers who will be retiring in the next ten years. thses can only come from immigration.

difficult call.
If we didn't have this huge influx of immigration there would be no need to build over our green belt countryside....there would be no need to build extra schools to accommodate them...our helath service waiting lists would be more manageable and there would be jobs for everyone thast needs them.

The only way to achieve this is by zero immigration for at least 10 years so the current population can stable....we don't want more pussyfooting about with the figures and stop all these exemptions!
>>>more workers to support those baby boomers who will be retiring in the next ten years. these can only come from immigration.

But what happens in 20 or 30 or 40 years time when the immigrants we have bought in to pay the pensions of TODAYS people start to retire themselves?

Do we bring in MORE immigrants to pay for THEIR pensions?

And then what happens when THOSE immigrants start to retire?

I am afraid the answer is NOT to keep bringing in more immigrants (the country can only take so many) but to start to slash the huge benefits bill which costs this country billions.

We have billions spent on housing benefit, keeping people in houses they cant afford, thus pushing rents up in those places as the landlords know they can get the money from the benefit system.

We have people (many immigrants) buying houses JUST so they can claim the housing benefit and thus get their mortgage paid for by the government.

We have immigrants here in Birmingham who buy cheap houses, then SWAP houses with another immigrant, and rent their houses out to each other, then both claim housing benefit. And we are all paying for it.

What a stupid situaiton.

Its about time. For too long Noo labour and its hand wringing supporters in coffee shops in Islington have pushed it under the carpet.

The real reason for labours mass immigration was to create a huge melting pot and to dilute the history of the very country they presided over that they hate so much.

Don't hold your breath.
too little too late.

Noo Labour???

Really?

Not the previous Conservative governments?

Not the coalition government who have been in power for a couple of years?
trigger, how droll, disservice to all those who do take medication.
As to the debate about immigration, at least have the nerve to say something informative, tell us why you don't agree with what's been said.

youngmafbog is expressing an opinion, whether you agree with it or not.
sure one could find other information on the web about this, from any number of sources. It's not beyond the wit of some to see that it has been damaging, if you haven't the resources, housing, schools, then how can you support more and more people, no matter where they come from

The problem with the idea that immigration should be halted is that the baby boomers are about to hit pensionable age, and there simply isn't enough indigenous Brits to support the cost of an ageing population.

Also - youngmafbog stated that Labour's reason for allowing mass immigration was to dilute the history of the UK (something that's impossible - history cannot be 'diluted' - it's already happened), because they hate the country.

This is a pretty strong statement, and hopefully youngmafbog can clarify what he means, because surely the same can be said of the Conservative and Liberal Democrats who have ALSO overseen periods of mass immigration.

Surely they can't ALL hate Great Britain?
i am not defending anyone here, just that it irritates when you get stupid comments like keep taking the meds, that is not a grown up comment, nor is it any kind of response to the question.
As to the baby boomers, many are having to work on over the age of what would be considered retirement age, say 60/65. I know that the government has changed the ages, but go on past retirement guidelines. Those who have seen their private pensions plundered are having to make savings or simply keep on working. That isn't fair is it.
But back to the question, when you have a large influx of people, some of those may not be eligible to work, so not contributing, for example a man gets a job here, fine, but then he has dependants, wife, children, so one wage, but say 4 people, those other three will need housing, school places, hospital, so from one person paying into the system you now have four, maybe more to support. That is where it becomes unsustainable.
i suspect that many don't hate Great Britain, but i also think there are many who are here nor for any love of Britain but economic reasons.

I was referring to youngmafbog who claimed that Labour hates the country.
ok,
mind you i wonder where Blair is right now?
Immigration is at the top of my list of things that make my blood boil.

The problem is that immigration has had a worrying trend to be linked with racism. I don't care who they are, white, purple, black or from Turkey, Jamaica or Russia. If you have no right to be here, get out.

This country is too soft. You try to get in the states or Australia, there's more red tape than would cover the wall of China. Here though, they get in through lax security, claim any form of asylum under the sun and receive any benefit going once they get here.

I actually think any of us should be able to live or work where we want without issue. But until other countries adopt that method I don't see why we should be the only country that do.
