I am surprised how many people think a child should be in bed at 7.00pm. It depends on the family and the child. None of the children I knew, including my own, were in bed at 7.00pm, especially during the summer months. I played outside until daylight was nearly gone with all the children on our estate. In a quiet area with no traffic I see so harm in it, as long as the children are kept an eye on by adults. It is a very small area where everybody knows everybody else. Something like this can happen in an instant.

There is a fine balance Wolf, but a lot of parents these days do seem to wrap their children in cotton wool to a great extent. There is no more child abuse around now than there was years ago, we just didn't know about it. It seems quite likely that the little girl went off with someone she knew - which is often the case.

Traffic worries me more than abduction.

Seeing as we have to explain everything on here...

No my kids were not on bed at 7 every night but at 5 years of age they would have been there or well on their way [I'm a great believer in the bath, story then bed routine]. I also had to get up for work so they would have been up with me at 6am!
Yes kiddies should play out as mush as possible...my kids always had a tan [so shoot me].
This is a tragic thing to happen and my heart breaks for her family, BUT and this is just my opinion, this could have been avoided. Of course this sick individual would have just taken another child but hey....I don't have the answer for everything!

And Trigs.... don't let her out! They are awful to re-train at that age one they get out side influences! [joke]

My daughter is now 15, not 16 till April. It gets no easier I'm afraid. You just have to trust them to be honest. One bit of advice though, mine gets grounded for not keeping in touch or not answering her phone [oh and being one minute late home]. It has worked wonders.
I was so bored/annoyed with her phone not being charged blah blah blah that I gave her really strict rules and stuck to them! That is my only advice lol

Maybe this girl did not have to be up at 6am to fit into her parents work patterns? As I said before, the early to bed routine is often for the parents' convenience, and you have confirmed it was in your case.

I used to live in a quiet cul-de-sac when my son was little - you do get drawn into a false sense of security, and my son loved playing outside with other kids, I was always glued to the window or at the front door, checking up, and this was in the daylight. He would not be allowed out at 7.30 in the dark though.

I am having a laugh at some saying about kids being in bed by 7.30 - if you are fortunate to have had or have one of these good sleeping children, then I take my hat off to you. My son was a nightmare at bedtime. {:o(

She's 7, and yes she might get sent to bed at 7.30/8 but she sure as hell isn't asleep by then! And I have to echo Groms, We do put her to put at that time more for our benefit than hers.

I'm glad Gromit and LoftieLottie posted their comments about children's bedtimes, because it's exactly what I was thinking.
Our little boy goes to bed at 9pm which, apart from anything else, gives me time to work and play with him. He still gets at least 10 hours sleep a night.
