I AM INTRIGUED TO KNOW WHO TOOK THE LID OFF THE SAVILE CASE. HAVE COME ACROSS ONLY ONE REFERENCE IN "PRIVATE EYE" WHICH MENTIONS "THE OLDIE" MAG. PERHAPS I HAVE MISSED SOMETHING!!

I suspect a few people felt sick at the sight of all that adulation when he died, and people filing past his coffin.

Perhaps they felt more able to speak up with him gone.

I first read of Saville's behaviour in Private Eye 20 years ago. The Press knew all about Saville but never exposed him. The same newspapers that turned a blind eye are castigating the BBC now.

apart from the various rumours over the years, I think the Newsnight report was the first - when it was spiked its findings found their way into The Oldie this year.

I assume a victim tried telling the BBC, only to see its investigation suppressed, for whatever reason. Plus at least one went to the police, but with the same outcome.

But as Grmot says, the rumours go back a long way, and have evidently been ignored for a long time.

Savile's stock answer to threats of exposure from the press was always to ask them if they wanted their newspaper or magazine to be the one that killed the charitable donations to Stoke Mandeville.

None did...

I once met JS at work (I worked at the BBC) and he invited me out that evening. We had a long interesting talk, but there was no hanky panky. Looking back I was probably too old for him - I was about 21.

I did. I wrote it on here after he died and people were suggesting he was gay. I found him quite normal. He was a bit odd because he was shaking slightly when close to me. Nobody else with all these revelations has mentioned that. He did not try to do anything much although he could have as we were totally along. He did know my boyfriend though so perhaps that was on his mind. I will never know, but although I was at BBC for ten years I never heard of these goings on. My bf worked on TOTP at the time and he never mentioned anything about him and young girls.

I have been reading posts from when he died ......... In light of recent events, it is uncomfortable reading, only a year or so ago it seems he was a much loved legend .

Would the prospect of charitable donations drying up really have stopped a newspaper that had a solid story about Savile? More likely the libel lawyers advised against publication.

Thanks to all for your reples. It seems that nobody knows the definitive answer..... another gag,cover-up perhaps????
