I keep saying that I agree we should be clamping down on immigration, but not based on the immigrants being 'foreign'. If that makes sense! Based on our economic situation. Unfortunately at lot of employers will be rather uptight at having to take on British workers who aren't good value for money and are unreliable!!
Our Benefits System as it has evolved now has a lot to answer for in my opinion. It is made the country lazy.
I do not apply this to all Brits by the way!! But we are known for our laziness.

In a perfect world Dotty but it goes on.
One of the places I go for coffee a lot has a lot of Polish workers and they are polite, friendly, hard workers, I'd rather employ many of them than some British slackers. It's about employing good quality staff regardless of where they come from.
Many of the hospital staff doing the cleaning work and such seem to be immigrants. I imagine for a similar reason.
I live in a very multicultural area and the load of people from other ethnic minorities (who knows if they are immigrants or not) who get the 6am bus into the city that I do each morning must be going somewhere - aka, they work, they contribute and support themselves and their families. Many have cleaning jobs at places like the universities or hospital.
I'm sure that there are a number who don't but then the same thing applies to a lot of British people who just can't be bothered to work and would rather live on benefits.
I went to help run a youth camp in Romania years ago and a fair few of the kids, now adults, have moved away to places like here and all the ones I know of work and support themselves. Trouble is, people like a group we have locally who harass people in town for money (usually with babies and children involved and literally grabbing and following people) give other hard working immigrants a bad name.

/// They were furniture manufacturers in the 1900s and ran the arcades in Southend in the 1920s. all worked hard. Some came here by choice before 1900 other fled here before 1905 to escape persecution in Poland. They all worked hard, the indigenous people in those boroughs starved and lived in poverty. ///
Seems like the indigenous people of Great Britain have always been work-shy even before State Benefits, I wonder how we ever managed to colonise most of the world and start the Industrial Revolution?

i have been treated, mistreated by doctors from all backgrounds, but at least i could understand what the English ones were saying. Unlike many who have fessed up here. I couldn't understand the last one, he was from Portugal, and his accent was so hard to understand that i had to ask any number of staff to translate.
ditto re penultimate para.

Lozzer, most immigrant children become fluent very quickly in their schools, even without specialist help. Children are like sponges. My husband could not speak a word of English when he came over and was fluent very quickly. I don't think the educational expense can be that great. I stand to be corrected.
