Surely the promotion of any sexualty over another is wrong. I think the Russians are being very sensible.

Ken and Barbie; those Jill and John books we grew up where children live with mummy and daddy; tv adverts; William and Kate's wedding, Popeye and Olive Oyle; fairy tales of princes and princesses....
The rights of heterosexuals are well entrenched and advice is freely available about all aspects of life for them.
Homosexuality is legal in Russia.

sorry but the proposed change is to stop the promotion of an area of sexuality not the supression of it, no one is "Not accepting" it, no one is suggesting gays should live in "denial" no one is suggesting they should think they are wrong. I don't see why a particualr area needs promotion. Other areas many smaller than homosexuality do not feel the need to promote themselves. What next?
The key word here is 'Promotion'
What is their definition for that?
Is it 'Homosexual is the only way to be and everything else is wrong'?
I suspect not. I suspect that the authorities will decide that anyone stating 'i'm homosexual and that's ok' is 'promoting' it and therefore breaking the law.
In other words; suppression.

It's a 3 day event in the gay village in Manchester(round Canal St) mostly (it's sectioned off and wristband entry only( but they do a parade through the city, a brilliant one at that.
It's somewhere people have a safe space environment with lots of gay friendly things going on. I say mainly in the village but lots of other local businesses have banners and welcome flags off and put events on.
It's a Manchester tradition now, very very popular and a great weekend. I've been to watch the parade loads of times and have been into Pride area a few years and had a great time.
We have plenty of other parades, Manchester Day, Chinese New Year, St Patricks Day, footballs ones, all sorts.

Yes, it is an attempt at suppression in that the authorities don't want homosexuals being overt; they'd prefer them to keep it a secret. This is, no doubt, based on the idea that people can be persuaded to become homosexual or on the idea that it would encourage more homosexual activity, since every homosexual would find it easier to meet other homosexuals if they can proclaim their sexuality.
But this is all based on a primitive fear, reinforced by a church which regards homosexual acts or relationships as sinful.
Danger UXD, do you believe its possible to turn someone into a homosexual? If not, what's your concern? The reason there are gay pride marches is that these encourage homosexuals to have confidence and the parades also proclaim to the world that it's time to accept homosexuality.

You shouldn't be fooled by the wording here.
This is another of those bills introduced by the Duma ostensibly for one purpose but in actual fact for quite another, namely the suppression of gay rights. Russia is a very conservative society at large and the government knows right well that this sort of thing plays well with the typical voter.
There's already various laws in Russia banning the "promotion of hatred" used as catch-alls to arbitrarily arrest anyone deemed a threat.
Additionally the protests in Moscow and St peterburg last year have made the Kremlin very jumpy. This bill would give the police an added legal justification for breaking up "subversive" Gay Rights parades, as alluded to by Gromit, on the grounds that children might be affected.

No I don't believe it is possible to directly turn someone into a homosexual, some may be unsure and find out later that they are gay. Who says I'm concerned? Really I was just trying to understand why there is a fuss about being prevented from promoting one lifestyle when, to use the carnival introduced above, a heteros only carnival would cause a huge fuss. I do struggle with the whole need of homosexuals to constantly organise events which effectively just proclaim "hey look at us we are gay", I don't see why sexuality is relevant in pretty well all areas of day to day living. Why is it?
