Should we now show more concern over this modern type of slavery, than that of which we are only made aware of via the history books?

And it isn't just women who are trafficked into the country, but men too, with the promise of work, then find themselves indentured, for want of a better word to work for peanuts in some shop, restaurant, perhaps washing dishing, all the while being completely invisible to the outside world, police, or any body that might be able to help.
I would quesiton that a woman or man who responds to an advert for Escort services was unaware that that would probably involves having sex for money. Whilst any sort of coercion or force within the Escort industry needs to be stamped on, the Prostitutes collective put another side to trafficking stories which have for years implied that the police and government use this naturally horrific idea in order to further oppress and criminalise sex workers generally. I don't doubt that there is a problem, but I think the idea of sensationalissing it for other purposes does perhaps have some foundation.

you sure, besides all our local papers carry ads for masseuse, escorts, and sundry other related businesses, not to mention the phone box cards, and other rather unsavoury ways to ply their business.

How is this an either/ or situation, AoG? Slavery is a vile and repugnant institution. It should be taught in history classes, and we should have an awareness of it.
Yes, modern day slavers such as these human traffickers should be exposed and punished by the law - but that is what is happening, isn't it?
As Nox mentioned though - there does appear to be some difference of opinion on exactly how many women are being trafficked like this, so I would be cautious over the claims of "hundreds of women trafficked".

Sqad, when i said supposedly, i meant that is what they said, wives completely ignorant of their husbands philandering, one thing to have an affair, that is bad enough, but going with prostitutes is altogether a different matter, seeing as how unless she is a high class call girl, the rest are likely to be either drug addicts, and need the money to feed the habit, or indeed trafficked women who will be reluctant participants, but do it because they have no choice.

/// Do we really need to choose? ///
Yes we have every need.
/// Why not let's treat both forms of slavery as abhorrent, and not put them into a league table. ///
The difference being that what happened over 200 years ago, we can do little about, except make sure nothing like it happens again, but if some in Europe wish to re-introduce the trafficking of humans into Britain in 2013, then surely we should give this first priority?
