He was born nearly 50yrs after the war ended. Maybe he is a raver?
I think so, yes.

I remember one of the boys in my school when I was a teenager being completely unaware of what I was referring to when I used the word 'Auschwitz'.
I assume he's unaware of 'Golden Dawn' then, I mean, they're not prominant in Greece are they
Alan Shearer(Newcastle United) done it for years after scoring a goal.I'm sure no offence was intended.
Its possible, but I find it difficult to believe, especially from someone from Greece given the prominence of Golden Dawn right now.

And what did he think he was actually doing?

I don't remember that everhelpful, do you have a picture link?
"He was born nearly 50yrs after the war ended. "
As Greece suffered harsh occupation during the war, this is still taught in schools, every year we commemorate the rejection by Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas of the ultimatum made by Mussolini to allow troops to pass through Greece, which resulted in the German occupation. This is called Επέτειος του «'Οχι» (Oxi day), and all schoolkids take part. It is virtually impossible for anyone brought up in Greece to be unaware of the history of Nazism.
DangerUXD,there are hundreds of photos of Shearer scoring a goal,I would imagine there are loads on You Tube,I wasn't condemning Him, it was just his usual goal celebration. As I said I am sure it wasn't done with any sinister intention.

ahh he runs along with one arm in the air making a fist, hardly a nazi salute.
I was going to say the very same thing, Danger.
OK,DangerUXD,you win,I support Newcastle and must admit I never took any notice until this thread,to be honest, I wish I hadn't posted a reply on this thread.
Rubbish! Does this mean that no one can ever stick one arm in the air ever again for fear of being branded a Nazi?
I really don't know

I do know that at 20 years old a lot of young men can be a bit of an idiot.

IMHO this doesn't warrant a life ban from their national side
Thanks,Naomi24.
It is daft.
// ahh he runs along with one arm in the air making a fist, hardly a nazi salute. //

Very true - he could well be a member of the black panthers though.
Have you seen the video link?

He claims, after the fact, to be pointing at an injured squadmate in the crowd, but the body language does not support that in my opinion. It would seem that at least one person in the scrum surrounding him was aware of what such a salute might represent, since he appears to be trying to pull Giorgios' arm down.

It was a stupid thing to do, given the history of Nazi activity in Greece, how offensive and freighted with meaning that salute is to a huge number of people, and especially given the prominence of Golden Dawn within Greek society right now.

I do not think it warrants a life-time ban though, but it does require some punishment.

This is just silly.

I remember in school that we had to put our hands up in the air in a similar fashion to attract the teacher's attention...

It's possible to KNOW what a Nazi salute is AND be punished for it in a way that doesn't entail a life ban, surely.
