Should Baroness Thatcher Be Accorded The Honour Of A State Funeral?
Can Churchill's funeral be used as a precedent?
Is there a danger of re-opening old wounds?
By the way - I don't even know whether it's being considered yet!

they have already said what type of funeral it will be, this must have been agreed with all parties concerned, primarily Mrs T. Personally it shouldn't be a state funeral, whilst i thought she was one of our best PM's, it doesn't warrant that. Churchill was a one off, there never was or never will be another like him.
I don't think you can say Churchill's funeral set a precedent for Margaret Thatcher having a state funeral. Churchill saved the UK from becoming part of the Third Reich, Margaret Thatcher never came close to anything so important or heroic, however much you might compare the Falklands War to World War II. She was divisive where Churchill brought the nation together. Give her a nice funeral, acknowledge her time in office but don't turn it into a Tory lovers circus, which will only cause more grief and angst for her family as I think that will sit very badly with a lot of people even 23 years after her departure from office.
I've been listening to an endless things my OH hated her for, many of which I had forgotten about, Poll Tax was the main one i had forgotten about, I was an activist back then and stood up for stay at home mums with no earnings that were being charged poll tax. I was on the front page of the local rag.
Shari....uniting a nation in peacetime is a different "ball game" than uniting a nation in war each one needing differing solutuins.
Yes, Churchill did unite the nation against the 3rd Reich, but the electorate showed it's gratitude by kicking him out at the next election.
Baroness Thatcher had a much bigger task in setting the UK on a firm economic footing, much against the wishes of the Unions who, at that time were very powerful.
I think Churchill probably had an easier task in many ways than Baroness Thatcher.

Yes, poll tax was a disaster, and annoyed some Tory voters. My late mother thought it so unjust that her gardener was being charged per head on his household that she paid it all for him. She, living alone and fairly well- off, was paying less than he was! When a lifelong Tory voter thought that way, the Party was in trouble.
