Also, in what terms has the B word been used as a pejorative slur?

Would you avoid using the that word amongst British people for fear of offending them?

Are you serious here, or just pulling our collective legs?
Aog, I was merely speculating about possible reasons for your error. Is either correct or do you have another explanation for it?
"female fraternity", there's a phrase.
Jackthehat, and 100 posts would be a good point at which to end the thread..errrr 101posts :-)
LoL JtH

So, the fact that some tribes people that lived on this green and sceptered isle were enslaved by the Romans - at a time when I doubt any resident within the islands themselves would self-identify as Britons - this means that black people should just get over themselves about the slavery they suffered?

Are you for real?

/// Because the slavery of the last century has led to the perception of an entire ethnic genus being viewed as second-class citizens, as the norm. ///

And you don't think that those conquerors of the past didn't also think that the slaves they were collecting, were not also deemed inferior to themselves ie 'second class citizens'?
AOG - "And you don't think that those conquerors of the past didn't also think that the slaves they were collecting, were not also deemed inferior to themselves ie 'second class citizens'?"

Absolutely, but I can't for the life of me think where slavery among Ancient Britons has led to people of colour not being allowed to sit at the front on public transport - in my lifetime. Can you?
Very possibly they did -- on the other hand, that whole view died some years ago. Racism is still prevalent even today.

It's not difficult, really. If a white man used a racially-charged term about black men, it's not at all obvious if they are racist or just joking. If a black man makes some racist comment about black men, you can be confident that they're joking.

And it does, or should, work the other way too. That it does not is simply because we haven't quite shaken free the world of rampant racism, and sexim, and ageism and all the other -isms.

/// No-one brings up slavery and race issues more than you on AB. ///

As you do homosexuality, but both make a good topic for debate don't you think, where else could such issues be openly debated except on outlets such as AB?

Even though the PC brigade still try to stifle such things even on here.

/// Aog, I was merely speculating about possible reasons for your error. ///

That is the whole point, 'what error', or am I missing something?
AOG

But you raise the topic of homosexuality far more than I do.

As I've already pointed out - you've raised six questions in three weeks. That's five more than me.

I pointed this out to you a couple of weeks back. Perhaps you missed that.
AOG

When Fredpuli43 referred to OG in his response earlier, you thought he was directing his post to you.

He wasn't.

He was answering Old_Geezer, who's AB name shares two initials with yours. Hence OG is Old_Geezer, not 'oldgit'.

Furthermore, you've asked in the past not to be called 'Old Git', and as far as I am aware, everyone on the News section has honoured that.
Aog, I refer you to the answer given by sp1814 (supra). Are you denying that you made an error?

/// this means that black people should just get over themselves about the slavery they suffered? ///

And does it help them not to, many horrible things have happened in the past some even worse than slavery, but does it help to keep bringing these things up.

Now if I thought thought that by keeping the past act of black slavery alive, it would make any further abuse or discrimination against black persons non existent, then I would be one of the first to agree that it should be kept alive after all these years.

But to use me and all other whites as 'whipping boys' for the evil deeds of our ancestors is just not fair.
"But to use me and all other whites as 'whipping boys' for the evil deeds of our ancestors is just not fair."

????

AOG - "But to use me and all other whites as 'whipping boys' for the evil deeds of our ancestors is just not fair."

That's simply a matter of percecption. I have never ever thought of myself as a 'whipping boy' for any transgressions of my ancestors - apparently you do.

I would not waste my time apologising for the actions of previous generations - life is far too short, and I would not be so self-important as to imagine that anyone held me personally responsible.
For Petes sake AoG - How are you and other whites being used as "whipping boys"? Who is using you as a "whipping boy"? How is deeming it culturally offensive for a white person to use a word but acceptable for a black person oppressing you at all?

And the black and afro/caribbean populations have moved on, but we should not forget important lessons of history and the evils than man can do to other men is one of those very important lessons.

Once again - if they choose to reclaim an word weighted with its links to salvery, perjorative word -and use it in an ironic or humorous way, then you do not have the right to be offended or to get indignant that is socially unacceptable for a white person to use that word, for the very reasons of history we are talking about.....
