I couldn't live in a country where the only real life is around the coastline and the interior is so grim!! I shall stick to rural Norfolk!!
Ah, doctorB, you stole my reply!
''I shall stick to rural Norfolk!!''

So you're sticking 'six fingers' up at the Aussies?
"They have more control over their immigration" - maybe, but Sydney looks more Chinese than Hong Kong!
i once dated an Aussie he was as racist as they come, he didn't last long.
LOL Snags. I'll have you know I am a born and bred Londoner!!
Actually I'm a Womble from Wimbledon!!
Actually Australia is inhabited by immigrants who have little or no regard for it's original people!
How did you end up in the backwaters then? By marriage or are you running from something ;-p
Moved from London to Bedfordshire to Hertfodrshire. Then we bought a near derelict cottage, gave up our jobs and Mr LL spent a year) rebuilding (with me as a labourer). I found a job straight away so we could eat whilst we renovated. We just fell in love with Norfolk so upped and went. 34 years on and now I am a true Norfolk Dumpling!!
Apologies Bazile for chatting on your thread.
Hard work, but nice story Lottie.

(excuse me for off topic Bazile)
think some might have to revise that thinking slightly, agreed the Aboriginal people's have been treated shamefully, but if you had watched Simon Reeve, who is doing a series on tv about Australia, there are deep rooted problems with their communities, not all about the whites treatment of them, bad as that was. According to Simon's guide, a young woman, she said that crime and alcoholism in their communities is rife, that violence is endemic, and shocked him to the core when she said her own mother was murdered. i think the sister in law had been stabbed in the neck many times by her partner, she survived i believe, and that due to the levels of alcoholism in these communities, many are completely unemployable, so live on benefits and drink away the day. I want to watch the rest of the series, to see more of his view on Australia and it's people.
Actually the other problem with Australia is that the weather is so 'samey'. It does get 'cold' in their winter, but not properly cold. It's like the seasons blend into one.

I like being rained on, being baked in the sun and then being blown by gale force winds...all in the same day.
10th isn't bad for us - considering the weather (as all Britons should at least a couple of times a day).
I visited an Aboriginal museum while in Perth, was very interesting, and i could understand why most of them have many problems, and i thought it was all very sad to read their stories and see their photos of long ago.
Biological mother emigrated to OZ some thirty years ago.......loved it.
One of my sons with Flying Doctor Service in Queensland.....loves it.
Had many Australian Juniors...strong work ethic and talented....impressed.
Health Service in OZ...excellent.
In was offered a job in 1980.....didn't take it.
Would i emigrate to Oz at any point in my career?......certainly would.
Would it be my first choice....NO.

My first choice would have been the USA.
What's the difference between a pot of yoghurt and an Aussie?

Yoghurt has culture.
Their economy is greatly helped by the massive mineral resources that are currently being dug out and sold to China

Without that, I'm not sure they'd be in particularly good shape

Whenever I've been there I'm always amazed at how expensive fresh produce is (especially fruit) that they grow themselves
