What Do You Think Channel 4
Is hoping to gain by this.

I'm curious as to why they are doing this. I would imagine that most Muslims would already have something in place and would also presume judging by some of the comments (Yes I know it's the Mail but their readers are viewers too)
that this will alienate some.
So I can only see a lose/lose situation here.
Any thoughts?

I'd be rather more concerned about the entire channel dedicated to Christianity that is God TV, which yesterday had a series of programmes dedicated to rubbishing Science in favour of Creationism. That's far more disturbing, frankly, that prayers at 3am that most of the Target audience already have covered anyhow.

Why should Christianity get any support from Atheists? In their, and my, opinion, it is just as wrong as Islam. And seriously you ought to start reading more of the threads on Islam on AB -- it's been torn apart viciously.
How would you feel if someone on "Thought for the Day" said something about atheism? Something along the lines of "We should be kind to others, not because we are told to be by a God or His representatives on Earth, but because we choose to be."

I love it. I put " God Slots", later adding "so-called", just to see what furious response it got from you AOG, and it worked. Now, let's take it that I call them "Christian programmes" , which is what they are intended to be.
I am an atheist, and cannot see the purpose in a public broadcaster being required to have any religious programming for a certain amount of time each week, as distinct from choosing to have such programmes. You, I take it, are Christian. If I may say so, objecting to an Islamic programme makes me ask what happened to Christian charity, tolerance, and understanding? However, an "Allah slot" is as agreeable to me as any other. And, as I have pointed out , Channel 4 is bound to have programmes to appeal to the interests of a culturally diverse society.

Anyone who has been to an Islamic country will have noticed that the devout stop work for prayer. Being up at 3 a.m, as can sometimes be necessary, is taken as a duty.
But we may have to take your word for it,AOG, if it is your opinion, that workers don't do that and that Muslims are work shy both here and elsewhere. Do you have any evidence that you can cite or is just something you'd like to believe? Is there anything else you prefer to believe: that the Sun goes round the Earth for example, and for which you can cite evidence (as the old astronomers did once) which we can examine? [Pause for furious response about sarcasm]

Fredpuli - //is it just of interest to you because it is Channel 4 doing it,//
Yes, my OP says so and I have re-stated since. I am curious to know why CH4 are doing this. As far as I can tell Muslims have not requested it and, judging by comments made on here, are unlikely to be using this facility.
As I stated earlier, it could just as easily been a Christian broadcast that was concerned. I can't fathom why CH4 have taken it upon themselves to do it.

Don't one just love it when one witnesses a person trying to wriggle out of a situation by pointing out that what they said was just them cleverly bating a person?
Some people are so predictable, so much so that they think others are also.

/// Oh, so referring to an ethnic minority group as work shy is somehow humorous. ///
Oh so it is ok to refer white persons as work-shy, but not some ethnic minority groups, ie "we need immigrants to do the jobs that the indigenous people are too idle to do" etc.etc.
Surely that is not the equality among groups that many seek?
How very one sided.

Nobody complains if you say some whites or some Muslims are work-shy, AOG. That would be common sense and human experience. You gave the impression that you were saying that ALL Muslims were work-shy, that it was their common characteristic, hence your saying that it was a good job that they hadn't got to work after rising at 3 a.m for their devotions.
Do you wish to correct that impression, false or not?

No - sorry but your argument doesn't hold water for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, the word 'immigrant' is not a synonym for 'non-white', as the recent immigrations from Eastern Europe attests.
Secondly, I cannot think of a single instance where anyone on AB has accused white people of a specific characteristic without prefixing with 'some'.
You targetted Muslims by specifically calling them workshy.

In Saudi Arabia the days are much shorter , so is the period of fasting
13.5 hours for Ramadan, sunrise to sunset which in July is 5.10 am to 6.46 pm .
Here in London sunrise is a couple of hours earlier so C4 would have to send out the call at 3am. and the period of fasting is about 3 hours longer
16.5 hours. .
Muslims who live in the far north may have a bit of a problem , they would have to fast for 6 months and eat what they like for 6 months.

I apparently only gave that impression to those who have obviously had a 'humour bypass', read what I put again.

No, still not smiling? Then I am afraid that there is nothing that can be done for you.

AOG -- sometimes we make a joke and people don't see it as one. When that happens you really ought to stop pretending that everyone is thick for missing the joke. What is wrong with just saying "Sorry, it was meant as a joke, no offence intended", hmm? No -- instead you have to take yet another opportunity to put yourself higher than everyone else. How snobbish of you.
