Seeing someone spitting, which I do quite often round my way, makes me heave!
Years ago spitting was know to be one of the causes of the spread of TB.

"Really ichkeria? So it's quite alright by you for people to spread their phlegm (containing all manner of unspeakable organisms) all over the place where people walk. What's also OK. Having a quick pee against your garden wall? Prhaps having a number two in the bushes in the local park?
"

Well you don't help your case by dressing it up in emotive language, and dragging in other offences. Surely not ideal practice for a learned judg. And I notice, by the way, that even Tora x3 thinks it's OK for spitting durting "high aerobic exercise". I agree, except that the street/road as a matter of fact seems the only place where that IS acceptable. As I say, it all depends on when, where and why. Blanket laws like this are in my opinion daft and self defeating, as the burqa police in France may belatedly now be discovering.
Ah right so, thanks NJ, do criminal offences not necessarily mean criminal records then?
I believe that both Hitler and Mussolini outlawed spitting.
I'd be happier if they made it an offence to spit chewing gum on the floor. Where I live near the pavements are covered with the stuff.
Disgusting habit. There are plenty of "no spitting" signs up around Singapore and it certainly seems to have curbed it there. If there was a penalty charge on spitting here, it would probably come to be seen as anti-social and people would be less inclined to do it eventually.
Seeing someone spitting, Makes me want to spit.
The government have stopped using valuable public information films like to spread health messages. More's the pity.

Makes me sick to hear every time something is brought out to instil some form of social discipline in, "Waste of time, how will they police it".

I say like they police all other criminal offences, if one or two get heavy fines placed on them they will soon get the message, it would be a good idea to stamp it out in football, after one or two got a yellow or red card for committing this filthy habit, they also would get the message.
I live in an ex cotton mill town, and spitting is mostly done by the older generation. They still have bad chests even though most of the mills closed 30 years ago. I agree with ichkeria, if it is done descretely then it can be acceptable. I have some sympathy if it is an industrial problem.
Bob whats his name made a fortune out of it with the dog .
Interesting point raised by AOG.

If a footballer can play 5 a side indoors and not spit for 90 minutes, why do they have to do it when they play outdoors?

Maybe they should carry hankies (and use them), and open up a new seam of lucrative sponsorship.
Assuming the police have bigger fish to fry.....
just what we need more petty little power crazed council numpties issuing more fines.

I'd rather it was made an offence to allow a dog to urinate on the grass in a public park.

what are they going to do if youre out and you get one of those little aphid type flies that have a habit of flying into your mouth and you spit it out ?

another truly pathetic idea....and a month long consultation !?

there seem to be a lot of people doing a pretty good impression of what Joko describes here: http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Society-and-Culture/Question1260736.html
Digging up irrlevant BS rather than addressing the issue.
Some people spit as they walk along with no good reason, it has just become a disgusting habit. There is no excuse whatsoever for spitting, if you need to get rid of something, do it into a tissue.
i thought it was, i am sure i have seen signs up saying no spitting.
some of our lovely neighbours do it, hawk, spit, gross
