David Cameron has hit back at Russian claims that we are 'a small island nobody listens to anymore'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24000421

His list almost seems to validate this claim by concentrating on historical events

"clearing the European continent of fascism" - with the Americans 70 years ago
helping to "abolish slavery" - 200 years ago
inventing "every sport currently played" - most at least 100 years ago
The Beatles - 50 years ago,
Shakespeare - 400 years ago

Oh hang in there's boy band One Direction!

Can we help him out?

What would you put in the list of the last 20 years?

I'll start with the obvious: Tim Berners-Lee : The Web - Oh heck that was 22 years ago!

British Scientists remain at or near the top in most fields -- these days a lot of the work is collaborative, though.

British sportsmen are still very competitive in many sports, although we tend to focus on them more when they aren't doing so well.

British actors are among the best currently, on stage and on screen.

British authors still write many brilliant books.

British technology is still used in all sorts of fields.

And so on and so forth. What has changed most in the last hundred years or so is that other countries have caught up with us, and some have also overtaken us. But we remain active and at or near the top in many fields, but perhaps less prominently or less exclusively.

ARM Computer Processors.

In most smartphones and Tablets.

ARM 2012 Turnover £576.9 million
Intel revenue $12.8 billion in the last quarter

And yes we managed 3rd place in the Olympics

Was really hoping for a world leading example rather than the traditional 'doing well considering our size' or 'top of the second division'

How many Intel chips in Smartphones and Tablets?
Rolls Royce aero engines.
we're apparently the world leaders in internet shopping. although i gather we're about to be eclipsed by the chinese. oh well....

at least our rail fares are still the world's highest.
Intel - How quaint...

// 61% of all computing devices shipped in 2011 were of the mobile variety—up from less than 1% in 2000. Because most of those devices rely on technologies other than Intel’s, the company’s share of the total market for processors in computing devices has fallen from 80 percent to around 30 percent. //

Perhaps the PM would have been better served pointing out all the things we haven't done that the Russians really excel at. Such as:

State persecution of the disabled.
State persecution of people according to sexual orientation.
State sponsored murder, rape and torture.
State control of the press.
State involvement in organised crime.

The list goes on. I know where I'd rather live.

What a question to put by AnswerBank's No1 anti British poster.

Why don't you just come clean and admit you agree with the Russians?
An untimely answer doctorb, the current Government are carrying out, or planning, at least three on your list.
No they aren't canary.
Canary. Why dont you join jtp and gromit and other anti brtish and s*d off to Russia then if they are so great.
One of the things that make Britain a place worth living is its tolerance of opposing views... something ymb clearly has forgotten in his "sod off" remark. Never mind.
ymb: Where have I ever said Russia was great. I merely pointed out how we are now following suit. You really should try to curb your misplaced outrage.
doctordb:

State persecution of the disabled - evaluation quango ATOS sending them to unsuitable work, cutting their benefits

State sponsored murder - Ian Tomlinson

And before you also embark on a fit of outrage, please note that I am not saying we are as bad as Russia, just that we're on the same slippery slope, albeit considerably higher up.

State control of the press - Leverson

YMB

// Why dont you join jtp and gromit and other anti british //

It is a curious truth that most of the right whingers posts are moaning about something or other. Often it is about the state of the country and why we are not as good as we used to be etc.

And now, given the chance to blow our trumpet and shout about something we have done that is great, you can only post snarky nonsense.
Canary - the officer who struck ian tomlinson was cleared of manslaughter at southwark crown court. Later he was dismissed from the police, and the met subsequently formally apologised to his family and made an undisclosed out of court settlement.

yet - are you suggesting that Gordon Brown personally sanctioned the killing of protesters?

/// State persecution of the disabled - evaluation quango ATOS sending them to unsuitable work, cutting their benefits ///

/// State sponsored murder - Ian Tomlinson ///

There should be State control over persons such as you, how can you possible say that each of these were either State Persecution or even State sponsored murder?

In fact I think I am right in assuming that you could be prosecuted for the latter comment, even in our tolerant but your hated Britain.
ATOS isn't a state company, so it isn't directly state persecution of the disabled even if it is persecution. And in reality it's closer to incompetence than persecution. In the meantime, yet another over-reaction from AOG and "left-on righties"...
