you get two thirds of the way through scanning, then the system says "Authorisation Required". So you stand there like a lemon for up to 5mn. when no-one arrives (which is common) what are you supposed to do? I've got a life, I haven't got time for Tesco to decide whether they're going to help me. Of course I walk.
We have an M&S express store at a local services to me. I occasionally stop there to shop. The shop assistants there all have advanced degrees in packing, I reckon. Unbelievable the amount of stuff they can stash away in a bag!

That's interesting trigger, because I have never seen anyone running away from them with their mouths wide open, hair sticking on end and their hands up in the air.
in the USA and Australia, some supermarkets still have two-person tills, one to scan and one to pack the bag. I don't think I've ever seen that level of service in this country.
Realistically if they didn't exist I don't believe the supermarkets would hire more staff just make you queue longer. I always use them but not for big shops. I've learned to laugh at them and their unexpected items in bagging area.
I loathe having my bags packed! I'm a little OCD about it and no one else would know that I want X,Y and Z in one bag because that is all to go upstairs and A,B and C are all for the garage etc.
put them on the belt in the order you want them bagged, Eccles. As soon as one lot's done grab the bag, so the checkouter has to start a new one, and take out any you want to put in another bag.
