you get two thirds of the way through scanning, then the system says "Authorisation Required". So you stand there like a lemon for up to 5mn. when no-one arrives (which is common) what are you supposed to do? I've got a life, I haven't got time for Tesco to decide whether they're going to help me. Of course I walk.

we had packing lessons.....however i hate anyone else packing my stuff now....

late 80's jno

A year or so back I was in B & Q in Dover (new one) I had about £130's worth of goods on a trolley and was directed to self service area, first item wouldn't go through, assistant arrived, sorted, last but one item wouldn't go through, no-one answered buzzer, so I just walked out and left the stuff at the till, their loss, if they can't be +rs+d to serve me!
I find B&Q the worst, their machines never work properly.
I bought white spirit.
had to have age verified.
wait for assistant.
scan bottle, machine says remove and rescan
machine now says 2 items in basket
wait for assistant who's now busy with another customer
machine cleared, doesn't take £5 note, wait for assistant who goes
and gets another note.
wait for change,leave.
This happened to me, total time 9.5 minutes.
going to ordinary till? 30seconds max.
and no nosey questions like "where is your sandwich bar?" when I buy 10 loaves for animal feed.
Don't like them, much prefer the tills with the checkout girls AND if these self service tills take over, said girls will lose their jobs, is that fair ?
I put stuff on the conveyor belt in order, all heavy at front to go in the big strong bag, then all veg and fruit, then all fridge stuff followed by bread and soft stuff. No one messes with my bags ;)
absolutely hate them
oh no, I was around then after all, fluff, you must have lived in a better area than me.
I hate them, I much prefer a human being.
They're quite good when you've only got a couple of items and don't want to queue at the other checkouts (which are almost always understaffed).
Do not want to do anyone out of a job.
Fed up of the DIY mentality. Check your groceries? here's the machine.
Blood pressure test? There's the machine in reception, in full view of the car park and waiting room.
I collect my own goods. Check, pack and pay for them myself. As a paying customer I would appreciate some service.
Perhaps a 10% discount for not bothering a person?
A 10% discount for self service check out would do very nicely indeed, Daisy. Start a petition - I'll sign! :)
I shall type this again and hope the garbage ad doesn't pretend I've clicked on it and lose my typing a second $£^£%^"£$^%$&^"% time !!!!!

My nearest DIY shed is B&Q. You won't find anyone on the tills during the week. I've lost count the number of times I've dropped the stuff I've got and driven to a rival instead. I really try to remember not to go there during the week now-a-days. Garbage service.

I like them. I only tend to get a few bits as just me so it can make it much quicker though if I'm getting cigs I have to queue but that's fine as in my usual little Tesco there is often a longer queue for the self scans than there is for the manned ones. In the larger busier stores they tend to shift shoppers very quickly too and always staff around.

I find the ones at Morrisons far more temperamental.

I refuse to use them, I like to talk to the person operating the till. Unfortunately, in B&Q there are no tills in operation, they're all helping out at the self check outs!
I said to a member of staff (Sainsbury's) that I would not use them as I did not want to be part of staff losing their jobs. The amusing thing is, the self service tills need more staff to help all the time.
Perhaps those of us who want to protect jobs should not boycott SS tills but use them really badly and need loads of assistance?
I usually walk away. The other day I was in Asda I had about a dozen items, the tills were busy so an attendant asked me to go through the self-serve till. She actually did the scanning and packing for me and gave me my change and the bill. They might as well have had a normal till there. All but one of the self serve tills were empty.
When going to a self service checkout take some extra items that you don't need and leave them at the checkout. This will ensure that you provide something for the otherwise redundant checkout staff to do in replacing them on the shelves whilst you still avoid the queue. If you like you can be creatively humorous in your choice of un-checked items such as rubber gloves and black pudding.....or headache pills and condoms.
gromit, No I never do a big shop, in my store it's generally baskets only on self serve anyway.
