Petard is a penny banger (firework)
as in hoist with one's own petard is letting of a banger too near and not throwing it into a crowd of younger kids.

I can't understand why these two have been picked out to stand such a lengthy Old Bailey trial for a bit of phone tapping, it is going on in much higher circles, take the recent US v German Chancellor Angela Merkel case.
And has anyone gone on trial for all the NHS scandals, surely those are much worse since many lives have been lost.

Freddie has gone over why and when they prosecute 2 prongs - enough evidence and in the public interest. I actually am surprised they didnt prosecute sooner - the Police showing amazing reticence of Savile proportions. If only you and I were treated like that when we wee on the street....

When I put the US v German Chancellor Angela Merkel case, I did not mean it was an actual case, it was just a terminology, perhaps in hindsight the wrong one, seeing that it has caused a little confusion, for which I apologise.
Maybe I should have said "the US v German Chancellor Angela Merkel affair"?

Phone hacking (not tapping) is different to the US NSA surveillance because:
The US Government is capturing data from EVERYONE in the interests of national security and to prevent attacks upon US citizens (Apparently).
The tabloids tagetted selected celebrities in the interests of making money for their proprietors by stealing private information.
That is not to say the US Governments actions are legal or right, just that the two are not really comparable.
Why prosecute phone hackers and not hospital administrators?
I agree with you, hospital staff should be charged. But because they haven't, doesn't mean a totally different and unconnected crime should also not be prosecuted. The Hackers are alledged to have broken the law, so a court hearing to prove guilt or innocence is only right.

He will have a part to play in this case I'm sure but no doubt he was there as an observer - that's what I assumed.

What I found interesting is that Rebecca Brookes has dyed her hair a much darker shade of red. I'm wondering if she has been advised to do this.
The court must look pretty weird. One of the reporters was saying that there are so many wigs in court that it looks like the court is full of sheep! Its a pity they dont let cameras in - I'd love to see it..

Given the evidence guilty pleas and evidence already presented I'll be surprised if this trial goes the distance expected.

I'm amazed that Coulson hasn't pleaded guilty already after today, which was pretty damning. The words "Do his phone" will become his epitaph. Further revelations of a similar nature are surely in the pipeline and IMHO it will get to the point where they'll decide to no longer continue the charade.

What is opened by the Crown and what the evidence turns out to be are often very different. The rule is "Open low, finish high" when prosecuting, because of that; open he case with as little as possible, avoiding quotes from witnesses who aren't policemen; policemen read from notes; but finish with a strong closing speech, when you know how the evidence, including the defendant's, has gone. The statement "Do his phone" may never emerge in evidence, but you can bet whoever says they heard it will be encouraged to read their witness statement before giving evidence !
