/// Deputy head Phil Clarke said many of the culled books had been replaced with edited versions. ///

When will Shakespeare and Dickens come up for scrutiny?

Talk about the Nazi's burning of the books.

"So you think that not allowing the books to be read at all is better than their being edited? "

hardly a shortage of books to suit the pc brigade that are suitable for kids that could have replaced those that they think are unsuitable with ones that will push their left wing ideology.
Interesting discussion on censorship. Check my recent post under Sport called Form Guide. Now THAT is censorship!
ARRRGGGHHHH! Sorry, but I really need to scream.
It is mockingbird, not mocking bird. It's a type of bird, not a bird that mocks.

BAZWILLRUN, you have still not said whether you agree that what is thought to be acceptable changes over time, do you agree or no?
Think whats happening is this particular generation think they will be the last so they are not particular if they change things so that the following generation if there is one will not enjoy these books .Just like comedians have taken the humour out of comedy so there is very little to hand on .
// this particular generation think they will be the last //

That fatalistic view tends to be for religious nut jobs. Most people worry about what we are leaving for the next generation, not a sod em attitude.

As for the nothing funny anymore, I think you will find there is plenty of amusing writing film and television if you look.
I was suggesting they are acting like it not important that these things are handed on . I think that we should be more carful of what we hand on and not ruin what was given to us. Depends on what you mean by funny .

youre like a little kid pestering

some things do some things dont, and different people have different views on whats acceptable and what isnt.

as for golliwogs I couldnt care less, theyre harmless kids toys that the politically correct have managed to virtually eradicate to salve their lust for correctness.

to a kid its just a rag doll toy, its the pathetic "i want to be offended adults" that make it something it isnt
librarians were doing this in my youth, They figured they had a limited budget so would spend it on books that kids mightn't normally have access to. They assumed (correctly) that people bought their own Enid Blyton books all the time.
A teacher friend told me that English departments in schools have been quietly phasing out the use of Blyton et al for donkey's years. Captain W.E. Johns "Biggles" books went the same way.
Trust the Wail to make a drama of it.
BAZWILLRUN, that wasn't so hard now, was it? Attitudes change, opinions change, so why should books for wee ones not be edited to reflect those new attitudes and opinions? The fact that not everyone agrees with you does not make them members of the pc brigade or right-on pinkos.
wow a patronising and arrogant no mark on AB..whoda thought it

believe me the day i jump to your tune isnt going to happen...Pffft

I'll answer what and when suits me not you
Bowdlerising has a long and ignoble history. I think someone wrote a version of Lear where Cordelia survived.
Enid-Blyton is no stranger to censorship, the original version of Noddy had a character called N*gger , and the ' gollywogs ' who lived in the dark wood stole Noddy's car in what would now be called a 'Car Jacking'
TWOCKING in Toyland, who'd have thought it.
getting personal, baz? Always the sign of a man with a convincing argument.
I think the gollies were turned into monkeys in more recent editions, sandyRoe
The worlds top ten childrens non PC books here , all now banned

How many did you read at school? at least 5 in my case.
In Wind in the willows the rats were originally communistic. In a film version I saw of it they'd somehow changed into spivy venture-capital types. Each generation has its own take on things.
do you mean wind in the willows or toad of toad hall?
