As most people laugh at Bowdler and, probably, Mary Whitehouse now, so I expect they'll laugh at these censors in time. Because it chimes with what some of you believe, doesn't necessarily make it right.

As for making books more relevant for a modern audience. I suppose, copyright permitting, there's nothing to stop anyone writing new versions of old 'classics'. just don't ban the old ones.

Svejk, it is quite possible that, in time, we will see the editing as unnecessary. The impression I get is that the books are edited when they show a black character in a bad light. If so, the sensitivity is that of the adults. Children now, being familiar with having black friends and in our 'multi-racial society, would not become racist, or learn racist thought, simply because a black character acted badly. The same applies to sexism ; the children know the world they are in, and won't draw a lesson from boys having a different role from girls in a story.

If the book says "all black people are evil", that's obviously different, but only because you'd have to tell the child how wrong that was.
