Svejk, it is quite possible that, in time, we will see the editing as unnecessary. The impression I get is that the books are edited when they show a black character in a bad light. If so, the sensitivity is that of the adults. Children now, being familiar with having black friends and in our 'multi-racial society, would not become racist, or learn racist thought, simply because a black character acted badly. The same applies to sexism ; the children know the world they are in, and won't draw a lesson from boys having a different role from girls in a story.
If the book says "all black people are evil", that's obviously different, but only because you'd have to tell the child how wrong that was.
