mikey.....never met my father, but my grandfather who brought me up was a labourer on the railway and I said in my initial post above , that I had a sneaking admiration for Biggs EXCEPT the physical assault on the driver.

So what you are saying them Sqad, is that your sneaking admiration of this common criminal is because he robbed a train ? I am still not sure why Biggs deserves any admiration at all, sneaking or not. Do you admire other common criminals or is it just Biggs ? Is it because he escaped from prison and do you extend this admiration for every escaped criminal ?

Because he had his jail sentence to complete ! Going to Brazil shouldn't be a

but he only came back for medical treatment, which he received even though he was in goal for part of the treatment time. he lived in brazil when he didn't need treatment let him stay in brazil when he did.

I have to admit to an amount of admiration for the ingenuity of the train robbers and other heisters in the pre-computer age.

The level of detail that had to be gathered and the planning that went into these operations is quite incredible.

To clarify, I'm not condoning the act, simply admiring the project management.

Sqad...I can say with complete certainty that if you asked me to join you in an armed robbery, I would turn you down, and then report to the Police at the first opportunity. That I think would take the b*lls, not coming on the robbery. Of course, most criminals don't do that but I have no criminal tendencies whatsoever, so perhaps I am behave differently.

Biggs was a career criminal, not some cheeky-chappie, who was quite a good sort really, kissed babies, was good to his old Mum, etc but made one mistake and that was getting caught.

As regards people who "admire" the planning around a crime but despise the crime itself, I look forward to plenty of similar comments when Ian Brady dies. After all, it must have taken considerable "project management" to plan their crimes.

Comparing heisters to Brady is apples and oranges in my book.

I realised that you were somewaht tongue in cheek sqad !

Its just that we seem to have gone a bit soft on these criminals. I am not a hang 'em high person at all, but Biggs was just a robber.

Actually I quite liked old Fletch, and as long as we hang on to the fact that it was fiction and comedy, then that is fine with me.

The one I really liked though was "The Italian Job" That bit where Noel Coward is applauded by everybody, Warders included, always makes me laugh...about 1min 24 secs in ::::
