He was a local Postman near me in South Wales, who got an OBE for his work in driving lorries over to Roumania about 15 years ago, to bring relief to those awful orphanages that were found there. He did it with his local baptist church and a some of us got together to nominate him. The process of nominating is labyrinthine in its complexity but I think that he had already been nominated by someone else, so I might not be responsible for the gong !

Mickey, I totally agree with you. I have never understood people getting awards for just doing their jobs well, be they a sports person, a luvvie or a business person etc.
If they go on to use their fame/fortune to tirelessly campaign and/or work for a charity or something then I have no objection of course.

The awards recognise achievement. Often in professions that have already rewarded the person. That has never been relevant.
A recipient may be 'just a DJ' - but if they are a world renowned DJ who has been industry leader for 20 years then they are in the frame.

"Well Lancelot, I was going to knight you for being a great warrior, ally and leader of men; but quite honestly that's what your job is anyway, and there've been no reports of you getting the shopping in for your elderly neighbours"
