I hate this time of year, when the Civil Service give each other awards, and Shaftesbury Avenue becomes even more "lovey" than usual. But here is one that would appear to be worth it ::

Yes, mikey......I agree.

Well deserved in my opinion!
Robert Bulgin sounds like a worthy winner of a gong.

Problem, for every one like him, there are 10 Pete Tongs and Karren Bradys.
Both are well deserved.
There are always examples of those who truly deserve the awards, you just have to go digging for them, past the media grabbing headline ones.

2012 Rodney Malcolm Aldridge, OBE. Chair, The Aldridge Foundation. For services to Young People. (London, WC2)

2011 Michael John Oglesby. For services to Business and to Charity in the North West. (Altrincham, Greater Manchester)

Etc etc

Why on earth does somebody like Pete Tong deserve an award ? I have to confess that I hadn't heard of him until about 10 mins ago, but he just a DJ apparently.

Come the revolution, we can kick all this rubbish into the bin where it belongs. What a waste of time !
many who do good works don't look for a reward, if they get one it's a bonus.. good for them, some notables also get gongs for good works, which is also good...
There are two people mentioned in the link.
Mikey, why don't you educate yourself before making ill (or non) informed comments?
Pete Tong does considerable charity work for Great Ormond St hospital as well as others! including Ellenor Lions hospices.

zacs...educate yourself !

Tong has been awarded a gong for services to music and broadcasting :::

and

No mention whatsoever about his charity work. He just plays pop music...what extra merit is there in that, that he should deserve a gong ?
He is not making the lame walk or the blind see again...its just poo music for goodness sake !

Here's another :::

Sir Marcus Setchell is already a "Sir" so we must presume that he has already been awarded an earlier, very high-ranking gong. I don't suppose that his delivery of little Prince George had anything to do with his new award did it ?

I don't have any problems with people being honoured, who do amazing voluntary work, like the Life Boat chap, or any of the others. But I do have a problem with people getting these useless gongs for just doing their jobs, as we expect them to.
Well, I'm glad I inspired you to go look for yourself anyway.
Been more worthy if he had been given a Knighthood, let's face it some get a Knighthood for just riding a bike.

But I already had looked zacs...it was you that hadn't bothered before you posted at 09.29 this morning.

Let me make it clear it, if I haven't already.....charity work, etc...deserving for gongs.....DJs playing pop music......not. Think of all those awards that a certain DJ was given...you know the one...he died 29-10-2011.

I thought I might have made a typo in my last post...poo for pop, but on reflection, I probably hadn't !
Question Author
aog....lets hope an award for Boris is not in the offing then !
If you read my post carefully, I didn't suggest his award was for his charity work. I took exception to your 'only a DJ' comment which was disrespectful and ill informed and merely made you aware that he wasn't 'only a DJ'.
Linda Bellingham???
For services to Oxo?
Question Author
The implication in your post was quite clear. You think that Tong should be eligible for an award for his charity work.

Well, if his charity work is all you say, then I would be quite happy about consider giving him a gong. But he got the gong for just doing his job, which in my opinion is what is wrong about our award system., and the point of my original post here this morning, at 09:09.
Well nice of 'em to bisto an honour to her for it I guess

(Ok, i'll behave)
Actually the title of your post was 'good gongs for once' which intimates that you thought this was the first time it had happened. Once again, a little self education proved you wrong, as per my post of 09:23.

So, good gongs for once. Incorrect.
Pete Tong is just a DJ. Incorrect.
