I agree with gness and baldric. It isn't a matter of trying to work out which side they dress, you naturally look around you to be aware of what's around. Chewn, you must notice occasionally whether the driver coming towards you is male/female /young/old etc. It happens in a split-second, you're making it sound as though drivers are turning their heads 90 degrees for seconds at a time. It's not like that.

I think this thread's run its course. Just because we do different things when we are driving, observe in different ways, doesn't mean any of us is wrong.
