Someone has written in todays Guardian letter page that there is a relatively simple answer to this crisis. Let Putin buy the Crimea from Ukraine, which could raise $12bn apparently. Russia wants the Crimea and Ukraine needs to the money !

Simples !
As noted in that article, no it's not because the constitution of Ukraine demands that any such change be agreed by "an all-Ukrainian referendum".

Besides which, the implication is that this will be voted on in a matter of days. Really? That is hardly enough time to have any meaningful debate, especially so soon after the crisis when passions will be high.

By all means, hold the vote if that is what the people wish, but it's a drastic and sad action to take and I don't think it will bring a peaceful end to the problem. Partitions are never peaceful.
I'm sure Mr Cameron will say that you can't just have bits of a country voting to bugger off ...

... it's a bad example to places like ... errrr ... Scotland :+)
Regardless of democratic or fair it is what will happen.

russia is not going to give up its port.
Russia doesn't need the entire peninsula as a port.
Tell that to Putin jno.

I didnt say they needed it I said there is no way they wil give it up.
Russia leases the naval dockyards of Sevastopol regardless of Crimea's constitutional position. Russia complains about the government in Kyiv being illegal but that pretty much sums up the Crimean Parliament currently. The current 'prime minister' was effectively appointed at gunpoint. As noted also the referendum which that government called for May 25 had now been brought forward twice. What is happening in Crimea is a factual version of the mythical 'fascist coup' Russia claims occurred in Kyiv
It seems to me that there are two major arguments for parts of the Ukraine to join Russia, they are linguistic and geographical.
If that was applied to the North Sea could Scotland, Wales, Ireland ,Cornwall and Brittany form a bloc. Not forgetting all their associated islands.

Mind you from a linguistic point of view , the last time I went to Liverpool I may as well have been in Russia for all I understood. LOL
