One of the reasons my wife Marjorie and I were going to vote for UKIP at the next General Election was their unswerving opposition to so called 'gay marriage' where men could marry men, women could marry women, and no doubt horses could marry cows.

And now Nigel Farage has said he WON'T overturn this ludicrous law:

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/mar/18/ukip-would-not-overturn-gay-marriages

Why on Earth has he backtracked? I called my son, who's at university, on a ballet course to discuss this, but he was out at some club call 'Throb', and my daughter was also otherwise engaged at a feminist retreat in the New Forest.

What's going on?

But seriously...what IS going on?

Isn't this going to upset some of the member of UKIP who have defected from supporting other parties, specifically because of the main parties' support of equal marriage??

Nige was answering a question that was put to him wasn't he. Isn't it normal when asking politicos what they will do, that there is a sort of pretend assumption that it means - if they were in a position to do so. wouldn't be much point in asking anybody anything otherwise would there.

sunny save

Lettuce, gruyere, bacon and tomato.

Not being funny - I would eat that it if were available at Pret.

But seriously...I thought the whole point of UKIP was to provide an alternative political position to the establishment. I would welcome their opposition to same sex marriage, because it would give those who really DO oppose it, a platform to protest. If they simply dovetail with the three main parties, isn't it going to leave those who sincerely oppose gay marriage with no voice?

I've heard of a Boy named Sue, but
a Man called Marjorie!!!

Possibly they think that the dye is cast for same sex marriages and Ukip are too late to do anything about it. I thought that the main reason for joining Ukip was the immigration problem, and the ban on more immigrants. Having said that we have Syrians already queueing outside our local Immigration centre with placards for the rest of their mates to come here because of the situation in Syria. Land of Hope and Freedom we are called now.
Actually I never read the leading posts, and was too polite to mention what I thought was your situation. Do you oppose gay marriage?
balders, as long as Marj can fly the Union Flag the right way up who's to be picky..:)

sp, that *is* Marjorie in the picture isn't it?
Very funny sp !

Farage will leap on any bandwagon, in order to the detract from his own Parties loony leanings. He is best ignored, as he and his Party are not going to win the next General Election. I said it before but I will repeat it now....Farage trying to control his own Party is akin to herding cats.

No.

This is my good wife Marjorie...on the day I told her that UKIP wouldn't be overturning this ridiculous law.

She was so shocked, she burnt her crumpets.

Yes. That IS a euphemism.
I suspect he thinks he would have no chance to put things right and campaigning to do so would lose more votes than it gained.
So, you are now voting for the Wee Fat Haggis and the Scottish Nazi Party?

But the point of UKIP is to present an alternative to the established consensus.

If Labour, the Lib Dems and the Conservatives are brooding aligned in terms of membership of the EU, immigration policy and the common agricultural policy, UKIP should be presenting a different point of view.

Otherwise, it's accepting that it's members just want to fall in line with what the main parties have agreed.

That, is to me...and to a lesser extent my wife Marjorie, unacceptable.

For 'brooding' read 'broadly' - bloody iPad autocorrect.
I don’t understand the point of your post. You’d be complaining if they said that, given the opportunity, they would revoke such a law. I don’t think their main purpose is to provide an alternative political position to the establishment, but they do seem to be saying rather a lot that quite a few people agree with.
Interesting quote from sp's link :::

"The UKIP Leader, who warned in 2012 that legalising gay marriage would force some churches to conduct ceremonies that are "anathema to them", said his party would accept same-sex marriages if it won the general election"

If it won the general election ? If ? What planet does tiresome man think he is on ?
meanwhile, a word about Marjorie's clashy clashy crochet, print, collar combo if you would sp ;)

Exactly!

For two years, UKIP have been vehemently opposed to marriage equality, and now all of a sudden, they say they won't revoke the law if they gain power.

Marjorie is in the kitchen in tears.
