// I wish to say this to those who are constantly wishing for an end to religion, can you ever see an end to religion per-se? If England ceases to be a Christian country, which this report says could happen in 16 years time, would you be happy to see it become a Muslim country? // No. Because Islam is another religion. We should not be governed by clerics. We should...

Be very wary of quoting figures for religious membership emmie, because the true amounts are not known, nor can they ever be truly known. They are, at best only estimates. But even accepting that your figures are broadly true at best, doesn't 4.8% Islamic equate to 95.2% NOT Islamic ?

/// AOG " One is not forced to worship "
So what do you call the rule in state schools that an act of communal worship
MUST take place every day. ///

Unlike some religions pupils are not forced to take part.

it is the fastest growing religion in Britain,
that is a fact, and it won't stop because you say so,

a quarter of a million Jewish people, as opposed to an rough estimate of 2.8 million Muslims, how did that happen, Jewish people have resided here a damn sight longer, and i am aware of when the first Mosque went up, as per one of Gromit's little snippets ages back, but they are going up and up, many churches have low attendance, yet Mosques do not, i am strangely not drawn to them, or to other organised religions, but a journalist friend, who did know a thing or two about Islam, said, and this was at least thirty years ago, Islam will be the danger to the west in years to come, well that time is here.

Since it seems that most indigious residents of these islands are not Christians, got me wondering, I wonder how many of the Pakistani community don't class themselves as Muslims?
Question Author
some could be Hindu's ^^
Question Author
back to the question, so he is wrong, ok.
Question Author
he was castigated for this as well
This has got me thinking...can you be Jewish and an atheist, or are the two mutually exclusive?
I agree with gromit. How is religion helpful for running a country? Obviously, the country isn't Christian. Individuals are or aren't.
AOG

solvitquick used the word 'Brit', which you previously said was offensive.

Can the rest of us use this term again?
Question Author
but the ethos of Britain has been underlined by the church, in our laws, way of life, you may not go to church, but people did, and any census form of yesteryear will undoubtedly show up that majority would have put their religion on the form, and generally that would have been CofE, raised in it, or Catholic, Protestant.
Question Author
i am sure there would be Jews who don't believe, why not - also that there are many branches of Judaism, as i posted on the other day,
Historically it was, emmie. Why should that make a difference now?
Dear modeller,
Before logging off, I must agree with your last posting with one query.
Is it possible for an aspiring P.M. to exit the closet as an atheist, as you say Ed Millibrand is, and win a General Election?
Before your post, I believed that if a candidate stood on a soapbox and said "I'm an atheist" then they would not be elected (if selected as candidate in the first place).
Modeller, congrats., you have a convert - I believed that an open-atheist could not be P.M. or politician. But I now think you're right and could be (in a secret ballot) an actual vote-winner although you do not go that far!
Now, why not? As people don't really give flick about religion - it's all about the economy and "what's in it for me?"- in my opinion.
Thanks for making me rethink modeller,
Kindest Regards,
SIQ.
I thought he was stating the obvious

the anglican religion by parliament and God ordained.....

Common prayer book act 1662 dictated the nature of the words to be used at Angican services

The Public Worship Act 1874 forbad Romish activities in Anglican churches ( 6 successful cases brought before repeal )

Yes I read the letter in the DT from the scientists - who are clearly better scientists than they are historians despite the fact that some of the signatories are professors at Protestant Universities ( oxf & cge )
Question Author
Peter, so did i.
When I go to Turkey I am not visiting a muslim country, I am visiting a secular country where he majority of the population are muslim.
