Benefits To Immigrants
In the light of recent events clearly something must be done urgently to stem the flow of immigrants into this country. Could the solution be to restrict all benefits to those who have lived in this country, and contributed to its public purse, for, say, a minimum of five years?

you're young and idealistic, klav, that's nice and as it should be. But immigration has little or no impact on your life. Take some of the sympathy you feel for immigrants and try to empathise with people who are affected. Even the Labour Party are, too little too late, admitting they got it wrong.

I'm glad the PM hit the deck running in the wake of the EU parliamentary elections.
We are clearly not alone in the EU in wanting to protect our country from mass intra-EU migration.
Now is the time to demand the restoration of the sovereign right of any state, whether a member state of the EU or not, to control who it lets in and who it does not. And while we're at it the EU should reflect on how it's expansionist policies in Eastern Europe are to blame for the problems we now confront. It should announce immediately a ten year (at least) halt to further expansionism.
In the UK employment is rising but unemployment shows no reciprocal fall, and across the EU the level of youth unemployment is an absolute disgrace.
Wake up Brussels!

Actually, it's about immigrants from anywhere, but the problem has now come to a head with the influx of people from the EU - and as Pixie says, it's not all about benefits. It's about all the services that Britain offers to all comers - health care, education, etc. As much as some people want to support uncontrolled immigration, if we're sensible we must acknowledge that the country simply cannot continue to sustain it.
Easy words kvalidir, no experience and empty words. Immigration is now too much for most of the EU countries to cope with, that is why the far left are becoming popular France, Germany and Holland Greece in particular. Too many of the poorer countries are being subsidised by us and the open door policy of movement throughout the EU is wrecking our economy. We must draw the line somewhere to stop the influx of immigrants. All we hear from them is that Britain has jobs and you get a house and money. The women have children in order to stay here the ones who should be deported come up with dire excuses to hang on here. We have our own children to put through schools but they are held back by the non-English speaking children who turn up with dummies and a nappy. We worked hard and paid our taxes and still do I struggled to make a home and family, but those people can come here and park themselves demanding money and homes and special treatment. I resent that. They should not be allowed the benefits of the people that have already contributed to the system.

Ladybirder, thanks. That figures. Sherrard's question mark threw me.
This from last night's London Evening Standard is food for thought.

Indeed, Naomi, because I am not old enough yet, I do however pay tax, quite a lot actually, and I do have an opinion on the matter which is not based on my age, it is based on what is right and wrong in my, and other people's, opinions. We don't all agree, you and I in fact rarely do as I think we are very different people, I often agree with Mikey or Eddie or the millions of other people in this country whose views you don't represent either.
To say that these issues don't affect me is quite a sweeping and inaccurate statement, they affect everyone and in fact imho affect younger people far more in many instances.
A brief and general aside to the point of this post if I may though.
I have had the courtesy not to ever drag anyone's age, be they young or old into the equation, and one of the reasons I left last time was it seemed impossible for people not to make sweeping assumptions about me because of my age. I would really appreciate it if the age thing didn't become another issue here as one of the reasons I left the site last time was I felt that I could not contribute to it without someone bringing my age up as a weapon against a perfectly valid opinion in debate. I had a blissful month of being anonymous here under this name where I could post without this being brought up. I wouldn't dream of saying to someone ' You only think that because you are old and outdated and stupid',that would be rude and ridiculous. It would be very nice if anyone disagrees with me that they simply disagree with me and don't base it on my age. I'm old enough to marry, join the army, have sex, ride a bike, live on my own, etc, I think I can also manage an opinion on things like immigration and how MY taxes are spent. This is not meant with any ill will towards anyone, I like it here and would hate to have to leave again, but I like the heavyweight debates and they become impossible to enjoy if things descend to judging people not by their views but by their age. It's also quite a poor marker as to anyone's opinion as I'm sure there are lots of UKIP loving 16 year olds who hate immigrants, they aren't all of my opinion on the matter.

kvalidir.
So you object to the issue of your age being questioned.I was'nt too enamoured when you questioned my origins and back ground yesterday and also asked if I was a South African.I thought you were bloody rude to as it had no relevance to the debate.
As a matter of interest. When do people like you who want to invite the rest of the world's waifs and strays to this small island draw the line. How many more people would you be prepared to share, say, your one square metre of personal space, one two three? Are you indeed old enough to have heard the expression, "You can't squeeze a quart into a pint pot"

nothing wrong with being young, k,lol. You can give us a young persons view of things(which, I guess, we don't hear around these parts too often)
Its not intended as an insult to point it out(I'm dead jealous)
Of course, if someone said you were a know-nothing kid, that would be very rude. Like calling someone outdated and stupid would. ;o)
