will you care that you will have to pay 5p for the privilege, i can't see it making any difference at all, now if you banned them in shops entirely, then the folks would have to have a bag for life, not the missus either,
or take a trolley, backpack, some other means of transporting the goods.

that's another point. When you've only got a couple of things now you carry them home loose whereas you automatically bagged them before the charge.
Funny, i'll lose £100 on a horse without batting an eyelid but it breaks my heart to buy a bag.

I haven't time to read all the replies here emmie, but we have had this system for years in Wales and it works very well. Almost everybody uses those tough bags-for-life, and we have stopped moaning and whinging ages ago. You English have nothing to lose but your bad habits !

you wouldn't believe the amount of people who'll request a bag for say just a newspaper, totally unnecessary, but apparently the customer is always right.

Up to three times a week, I get a plastic bag pushed through my letterbox by a charity demanding my cast-offs. I could use these for shopping or for bin lining. Is the government going to ask the charities 5p for each one they deliver, or am I going to be expected to pay 5p for each one which hits my doormat ?
By the way, I long ago ran out of cast-offs, so must have received over 50 of these which I now have to try to recycle somehow.

As already stated there has been a 5p charge since 2011 (I think) in Wales and it's working well. I have one of the nylon ones in my handbag for impulse buys as well as a stack of reusable bags in the car. Charities are gaining from the 5ps so all in all I think it's a good thing.

I have my own trolley and a good shopping bag. I very rarely use a plastic bag, Farmfoods tend to just stick stuff in one of their bags though.

These bags-for-life that Tesco, Morrisons, etc use are marvelous...much, much better than any old plastic carrier bag. My niece moved flats last year, by using a large rented van and about 35 bags-for-life ! Avoid the flimsy cotton ones though...plastic is best !

i agree start charging, but some are obviously going to say why should you pay, personally i would remove them entirely.

Great, we should see a reduction on our shopping bills now. Every item in a supermarket already has the cost of a plastic bag included in it.

I'm assuming they're not going to be charging for something which is already charged for?

if they can do it so can we, and look at the info on how many bags gets used, and the fact is most plastic bags are not biodegradable
