/// It emerged this morning that, because of his mental health, he will now be able to appeal against his sentence in a bid to win an early release. ///

What to kill again?

When will they ever learn?

sp - I don't think they get time off for good behaviour anymore and their sentences do get added to if they commit a crime while inside.
sp1814 Sorry but you don't know much about jails in the UK.
There is NO internet access for prisoners under any circumstances. There may be computers in the education area but they have no internet access just the education programs. A TV set in your cell is not automatic , now it has to be earned by good behaviour, it will be removed if the prisoner breaks the rules. Time off for good behaviour ?, there is only the normal release system where a sentence is automatically reduced by 1/2 if it is under4 years. If the prisoner breaks the rules again they can have the release date put back or time added to sentence.
sp1814 I find my views lurch to the 'right' when it comes to crime and punishment.

Personally, I believe that jail should be a completely miserable experience, with zero Internet access and zero in cell entertainment.

Also, you know where inmates get time off for good behaviour? I think it should be the other way around. A five year sentence is a five year sentence, which will have mandatory increases for *bad* behaviour.

As part of the sentence, inmates without skills will have to choose from a number of vocational subjects so that when they are released, they at least have a better opportunity to get work.

If they refuse vocational training, then their sentences are added to, until they do.///

I have been a member of AnswerBank for nine years, and in all that time, no-one has ever written anything so cruel and spiteful in response to one of my posts.

There is a stroke of evil in you sir.

Evil.

Thank you. I must admit, my knowledge of prison life is limited to what I've gleaned from watching 'Prison Break' (awful), 'Oz' (awesome) and 'Prison Cell Block H' (confusing...because the walls were obviously made of cardboard, so escape would've been incredibly easy)
Dont know why people whove never been to jail think that they can comment on what prison life is really like. Jails are NOT the holiday camps that the media portrays. Prison life is incredibly tedious, unpleasant and at times frightening.
Careful Sp1814...you might get him so riles that he replies and then gets banned. Wouldn't that be a shame !
Riled.

"Saucer of milk for table four..."
LOL SP1814 !
The incentive to work in prison is that you get paid to work or to attend vocational training courses. There is a basic 'wage' in prison in the UK it is about £4.50 a week. This is credited to the prisoners 'canteen account' and can be used to buy items such as sweets, food items, phone credit and of course tobacco.
The 'basic' does not get you much not even 10 cigarettes a week at prison 'canteen' prices which are a lot higher than shop prices. Because of this prisoners who work inside the jail, in the kitchens or as cleaners for example get extra money about £5 to £10 a week on top of 'basic'
A prisoner who breaks the rules for example by stealing food will be sent 'back to basic' which would mean that if they smoke, and 80% do, they are going to be short of fags or tobacco.
Good article on prison 'wages' here

How well I remember prison canteen prices EDDIE, it was criminal.

/// Me...I'd be much less likely to commit a crime if I knew there was a hefty lump of jail time in front of me. ///

Can you honestly say hand on heart that you would be much less likely to commit a crime knowing that there would be a lengthy spell in prison if caught, rather than the chance of being executed if caught?
AOG

Yes, absolutely. I don't find the idea of death as scary as years of incarceration.
// Prison life is incredibly tedious, unpleasant and at times frightening. //

Good. So is crime.
sp1814, I totally agree, I would choose death over a life in prison anytime.

So they hang him, he is then a martyr and resting in peace. Isn't that exactly what he wants!

Bang him up and let him suffer in prison or a secure mental facility for the rest of his rotten life!!
When people commit these crimes, I dont actually think they consider the likelihood of actually getting caught or the consequences.
^ Precisely

Worse for the criminal

But sadly doesn't give the armchair killers the 'retaliation' they crave.
zeuhl // Worse for the criminal //

So you want them to live because it's actually worse than dying? I thought you were a woolly liberal, but you want retaliation too. You just don't think killing them is harsh enough.
