note at St A, you get a BSc in Science and a MA in Arts subjects, a BA is an ordinary degree.
Back to the original question, such as it was, the reason Salmond is preaching to his nearest neighbours is laid out in his lecture to The New Statesman:
http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2014/03/alex-salmonds-new-statesman-lecture-full-text - do a search for "The Association of North East Councils and Cumbria".

Whatever you might think of him, his political philosophy or the country he wants to be independent, it's an interesting read.
Naomi Agreed, but at least they will be our own.
DT, Who's St A?

SirOracle, and very welcome you are to them.
St Andrews.
St Andrews, naomi....Salmond's mater....
A wee reminder to everyone. Alex Salmond is the democratically elected leader of a democratically elected government.
Oh, right. Thanks. I thought he was talking to someone here. I think the rogue comma after the 'St A' did it.
Surely you have heard of St Andrews University.... the "IN" place for the aristocracy and royalty.
DT, Yes, I've got it now.
some people seem more interested in his height LOL.
Perhaps they think it's the most interesting thing about him.
Personally I wishthey get independance.
The English, Welsh and N Irish should alsl get a say to get the jocks their independance. It will benefit us all.
the English welsh and northern irish should get a say ? don't be ridiculous.
Aye, and let's ask the Martians and Venusians whit they think :-)
Can I please set the record straight. In September I won't be voting for Alex Salmond, I shall be voting in a referendum for an independent Scotland. Sure there will be mistakes made, but they will be our mistakes!
lets hope Shetland and Orkney bid for independence from Scotland. You can kiss your oil goodbye then.
DTC, you belittle Salmond and his honours degree from St Andrews whilst the highest academic achievement of Iain Duncan Smith, for example, was a 'pass' at Sandhurst! Of course, his CV at one time included a claim that he had attended the University of Perugia. He hadn't. How's that for "not the brightest cookie in the jar"?
i'm not Scottish and no claims to Scottish ancestry, in fact I've only been there once, beautiful countryside and fabulous pubs all over the place. friendly people when I could understand them and even when I couldn't.

I just want to wish you all the best of luck whatever you decide. however I do get the feeling that this decision has not been very well thought out and there are a lot of questions still to be considered.
On a sideways tack, if Scotland goes independent, what happens to the contingent of Labour MPs they send to Westminster? The good old East Kilbride question.

It would kill the Labour Party, so why is Cameron (a good Scots name) backing the "no" vote?

Am I missing an elephant in the room?
