With a record like this, why has it not been banned, well we know the reason don't we?

*** Since the carnival did not have local authority permission, initial police involvement was aimed at preventing it taking place at all, which resulted in regular confrontation and riots. ***
Wikipedia.

/// Scotland Yard staged a series of dawn raids on Tuesday linked to this weekend's Notting Hill carnival in west London. Weapons including two machine guns and a handgun, crack cocaine and about £70,000 in cash were seized, and 88 people were arrested. ///

/// Ch Supt Robyn Williams said: "We are committed to ensuring that Notting Hill carnival remains a safe, vibrant and enjoyable event. ///

Why wait until just before this Carnival, the police should be raiding these premises on a regular basis throughout the year?

I take it you'll not be going again this year?
aog - when is the next MOBO awards ?
they said it was related to the Carnival, so presumably there was no point in doing it in December because nobody would have been up to anything.
aren't "Related Questions" useful, we can see previous questions from you on the same subject. Quite a bete noire.

It's just a drug taking mugging jamboree.
Yawn!

I'm just back from a trip and: is it that time of year again?!?

Another of the 'old woman's' petty obsessions.

Unlike aog (who I'm sure is a regular and expert visitor) I have only been to the Carnival twice - on neither occasion was it a 'carnival of violence' - it was a lot of fun.

I suspect someone should stop eating cheese before they go to bed LOL
You know summer's on the way out when AOG has his annual moan about this :-)
I pine for the days of steel bands - I find the sound systems deafening (I'm deaf enough already). But yes, everyone there seems to be having fun and enjoying the parades and eating jerk chicken and whatnot.
Loads of people travel to Carnival every year to witness a "carnival of fun" and most years a few get stabbed, sometimes, fatally. What fun and a gay time they had.Herded and kettled by police, through necessity, very poor sanitary arrangements and then a visit to St Charles A&E or their morgue.
OMG, on all my visits I've never been kettled! What have I been missing??

and getting food poisoning for their trouble. Street food is openly sold without food hygiene inspectors being allowed to inspect the poor standards being used. Booze is sold on the streets at extortionate prices from ad hoc stalls. No excise licence needed at Carnival for these hawkers who are breaking the law. Police instructed to ignore use and sale of drugs openly on the street. What revenue returns does the tax payer get to compensate for the high cost of policing this event. One big crime spree where they can get on with any criminal activity knowing that they will not be arrested as police fear it will spark a potential riot.
Kettling is where,at the carnival, set routes of lanes are set out by the use of crowd control barriers and attendees are virtually herded along by the crowd behind them, they can't cross the roads etc or sometimes get to a loo. They are literally penned in like cattle and driven by the flow irrespective of where some would like to go.That is what I mean by kettling and it happens at Notting Hill Carnival.Believe me it does.
jno
If you did'nt experience kettling I can only imagine you were sitting on a low loader with feathers and garlands all over you banging away at an oil drum.
jno....you devil, why didn't we know you are a samba club member?
The Notting Hill Carnival is a great British tradition. But it is not compulsary.

You can sit at home in front of your Korean TVs and watch American programmes if you like.
Ah the old notting hill crimathon, is it that time of the year already? Yes the police must turn a blind eye to the crime committed over this weekend lest they be labelled with an ......ist!
oh, samba's from much further south, Brazil. Carnival used to be based on calypso, which is Trinidadian, but these days it's much more Jamaican, loud and rappy, which I find less agreeable; but it seems to be popular among modern youth (of all races and colours).

A proper Brazilian carnival would be good; Willesden could have its own Sambadrome.

Notting Hill Carnival is a Afro/Caribbean/S.American tradition that happens, god knows why,to be held in Great Britain.
Remember all those who wish to attend and have a jolly good fun time at Carnival this year. The Metropoltan Police, usually, cordially invite you to make a return visit a few days after Carnival to attend their Notting Hill Police Station, Ladbroke Grove. There you can browse away a few jolly hours sifting through a mountain of wallets, purses and handbags and play"spot my property".The contents of aforementioned will, however, no longer contain, cash, keys, credit cards treasured family photos etc. Have a nice day!!!
