It's Entirely Appropriate That This Soldier Is Disciplined
...but part of me kinda wishes he could have a little slap on the wrist and have it forgotten.

I laughed. I expect he’ll be disciplined though – hopefully not harshly.

Absolute disgrace to the uniform. The British Army are renowned for their humour(particularly in adversity) however there is a time and a place.
Outside Buckingham Palace in full view of the general public and tourists is NOT it.
For those who say he was relieving boredom etc remember this.
It is his job to perform Public Duties, it's part and parcel of being a Guardsman I the Household Division, a job he knew full well he would be doing when he VOLUNTEERED to join HM Forces in that particular capacity?
What next? Shall we have them all doing their own little thing as they carry out Public Duties? Shall we not bother with the centuries old Ceremony of the Keys, just bimble along and chuck them to the guard on duty?
His colleagues will take a very dim view of this and I hope he gets the full weight of military law thrown at him, which he undoubtedly will.
The British Army has had drill and tradition at it's very core for over 300 years.
Let's not make a mockery of it. If he doesn't like it he can give his 12 months notice or PVR but either way the Guards in particular and Army in general does not need this type of 'soldier'.

// One little Prince thought this was good sport, so repeatedly pedalled in and out of the gate ad nauseam. After a great deal of saluting, said Prince got a clip around the ear from my friend. //
Prince Charles apparently or else it is an urban myth
the official story is your fren' complained and a quiet word was had....
comes up reguarly in dicussions of how we should treat princes....
randy andy demanded everyone called him 'sir' apparently

Standing guard at your post when it's your duty to do so is hardly 'blindly following orders', stuey. Certainly not for a Guardsman, to whom this is his bread and butter whilst based in London District.
What if he were on stag(Army term for guard duty/watch) in barracks whilst all his muckers are safely tucked up and something untoward happens whilst he's larking about?
If he can do that whilst guarding HM Queen he'll think nothing of @rsing around on stag. Who wants that sort of cameraderie in a close-knit infantry unit?
If(as I suspect it is) this is real footage he has brought disgrace and dishounour upon his Regiment, for which he'll be roundly condemned.
Those who haven't served have no idea how seriously HM Foot Guards take this sort of service and Public Duties. He couldn't have done any worse if he'd have wiped his @rris on the Regimental Colours!

I visited friends in Athens a few years ago, and was taken aback by the uniforms worn by the soldiers near the Colosseum:
