I am sure they can - and trying to equate cottaging as being the standard behaviour of all homosexual men is ignorant and entirely inaccurate. No-one suggests that a cottage has to be tolerated - be honest, they don't.
"We have to tolerate gays flaunting their sexuality in the street. I can't ever recall seeing heterosexuals dancing about in the road crying... I'm straight, I'm straight.... or something."
No sure which streets you are frequenting divebuddy, but I have yet to see any gay man - or indeed woman, dancing about the street crying 'I'm gay, I'm gay .... or something' - are you sure you are not dreaming this?
"And, of course, we mustn't use words like deviant (no matter how accurate they are).
Oh yes - let''s!
Definition of the word 'deviant' - "One that differs from a norm, especially a person whose behavior and attitudes differ from accepted social standards."
Since homosexuality is accepted in modern day society, and you fail to accept it, deliberatly using provocative expressions to describe it, which is inherently hostile, and against accepted behaviour - that makes you a deviant.
Ok with that?

vetuste - "For "life styles" read "sexual preferences".
I am sorry if I appear to be pedantic on what may well be your first day on here, but homosexuality is not a 'preference' either.
Preference infers and element of choice, which can be accepted or declined.
Homosexuality is not a choice.
Hope this doesn;t put you off - we are a pretty full-on bunch here on the News thread, but as I said, you are most welcome.

vetuste - "I don't disapprove of precision and clarity, Andy."
Wonderful - thans for that.
I am also advised that you are not in fact a 'newbie' - my apologies, I don't recall seeing your name before.
Of course, I quite possibly have seen your name, and even corresponded with you previously, in which case, apologies, put it down to my increasing age!

divebuddy - "A-H, 1) So cottagers are sort of equivalent of Muslim Jihadists, then. Very much a minority and not representative of the majority."
Are you seriously trying to equate a fanatical bunch of murdering extremists with a section of society who appear to offend your delicate sensibilities???
Really?????
Is that the road you want to go down to pursue your argument?????
Fine, you can demolish the intelligence of your own argument, saves me the tedious task of doing it for you.
"I'll try to bear that in mind the next time I stumble across a gay couple having an amorous encounter."
There you go again living in that parallel universe again.
"I have never 'stumbled accross a gay couple having an amoorous encounter', and I have probably been stumbling a lot longer than you have!!! Where on earth do you go walking? I suggest you change the areas and find somewhere more in keeping with your buttoned-up attitudes.
"2) I imagine the various "gay pride" marches/street parties that take place have passed you by ,then."
No.
And your point is?
I don't believe people on Gay Pride marches go shouting 'I'm gay ...' - because that is rather the point of the march in the first place.
""3) Your dictionary definition is just a teeny weeny bit biased. Other definitions are available."
Using evidence twisted to back up my viewpoint? Surely not!!! Whoever would do such a thing!!!!

Aah, yes ... throw some money at the problem. Other people's money.
That's all right then. The problem will go away.
Why create "a fund"?
Because, as we all know, the money is totally irrelevant. Ms Morgan can't think of anything the money could actually do, so ... ring fence it as "a fund".
Ms Morgan probably doesn't give a stuff about LGBT issues. But we can no longer say that publicly, because she has created "a fund". She has "done her bit". Hoorah.
She can now carry on, hoping all those annoying gays will leave her alone. And if anyone ever accuses her of failing to address LGBT concerns, she can say ... Hello! Who was it who created "the fund", huh?
In the meantime ...
Should LGBT issues be introduced at Reception level?
Head says ...
Trying to teach LGBT issues told four year olds is patently absurd, and the majority of the LGBT community are not interested in this kind of nonsense political posturing.
Heart says ...
We have to automatically support anything relating to LGBT, even when we know it is ridiculous, otherwise people will think that we "don't understand" and that we are intolerant. We need to respond in a way that will make us appear open minded. Therefore:
Mouth says ...
It's a good idea.

When gays bang on about tolerance it does seem to be a bit of a one-way street.

You have heard about heterosexuals 'dogging', haven't you?
There's a CH4 documentary called 'Dogging Tales' on 4oD.
Have a look.
And you've never seen straight people flaunting their sexuality on the street?
I take it that you've never been outside a nightclub every Friday or Saturday night on every week of the year in cities and towns up and down the country.
Seriously - have you never seen straight drunk people snogging?
I find that quite astonishing.
What you seem to be doing, is holding gay people to standards that you don't assign to straight people.
Why is this?
I think I might know, but think it would be better coming from you.
