Yet another example of human nature - if you can make someone else responsible for your actions, it excuses you from the tiresome task of having to take responsibility for your own actions. This man believes that it was the victim's fault, therefore it is not his fault, and he is not to blame. It is human nature writ large, but part of being an adult is accepting...

shoota - // //Hands up - I was being deliberately provocative, Why//

Simply because I believe that Naomi has chosen to misunderstand a point I have made earlier in the thread, and attribute a position of appeasement and excuse for this disgusting behaviour, which is not something I have ever even thought about, much less postulated on this thread.

When I picked her up about it, she challenged me to remove her post if I didn't agree with it - again an unnecessarily confrontational approach.

From there she went to insults - calling me - or at least my posts, and therefore by default me, 'pathetic' and suggesting I talked to someone else.

I decided to poke the bear a little - I firmly believe that if you can't take it, you should not dish it out.

However, I am in danger of descending into Naomi's default position - at least when communing with me - which is being picky for the sake of it, and I am not willing to pursue that method of communication, so I will leave her to it - unless she continues needling, which I suspect she will.

It is interesting that divebuddy, with whom I often disagree, has taken the same stance as me, and mikey has been kind enough to offer me best Answer, so I cannot be that much at odds with the prevailing throught on the thread.

Hope this helps.
So you (a moderator I believe) saw a confrontational situation developing and decided to inflame it more.
Is that a valid interpretation of your post?

I post as I see fit, and I am not obliged to discuss or justify my actions to anyone except the Editor - and I do not believe that is you.

Thank you.
There has been enough confrontational cavilling on this site to last us all summer.
I for one would welcome a break.
The concept that victims take some level of blame, if not all of it, for the crimes they suffer, goes far beyond rape, and far beyond India. This particular case may be an ingrained cultural thing unique to the subcontinent that we should find highly distasteful, and should try to stamp out, but it's a mistake to pretend that it's somehow India's problem alone.

The only people responsible for crimes are the criminals themselves. Sadly, it can take some work to persuade people of this. Sometimes even the victims won't believe it: "I should never have provoked him", etc, is not exactly an unusual attitude in this country either.

That is the nature of the AB in general, and the News section in particular.

It attracts people who have passionate and deeply held views who are more than willing to get into the ring and defend them.

Debate is robust, occasionally a little more than that - but by and large the regulars know each other, and will prod weaknesses from time to time.

But none of it is fatal - and everyone lives to post another day.

Maturity and self-control are required to post appropriately, I was guilty of failing to exercise either in my previous post to yourself.

I would like to withdraw it, and offer my sincere apologies.

With a heavy heart, I have to agree with your point.

There are endless cases of on-going domestic violence and sexual abuse which are allowed to fester in an atmosphere of supposed culpability and involvement created by the abuser in the minds of his victims - and that is a planet-wide problem which we must strive to eradicate whenever and wherever we find it.
These things will only ever stop with the education and empowerment of women around the world!!
Andy - no need to apologise to me.
I'm just deeply saddened by how all these threads descend into playground squabbles, one reason why you rarely see me in 'news'.
It's boring.
andy-hughes, //I believe that Naomi has chosen to misunderstand a point I have made earlier in the thread,//

I didn’t choose to misunderstand your post. I disagreed with you.

//When I picked her up about it, she challenged me to remove her post if I didn't agree with it//

You are being disingenuous. No challenge. I explained what I meant and said if you were still offended you should remove my post.

I’m out of this. It’s silly.
Let's try to stick to the original topic without winding each other up, shall we? :)
Fair point ABSE - I am moving on.

Flipping heck ! Its been a bit lively on here while I have been out to work by the looks of it...wished I had stayed in now !

I agree with our spare Editor. Nobody on here is going to come out in support of this rapist that has been interviewed, so we should all be agreeing with each other. Lets stick to the topic shall we ?
Hinduism is very much to blame here. Hindus believe in the circle of rebirth, which ends up with men who live good lives rising with each re-birth through the caste system to the highest caste. If you do evil in your life as a man, you will have to come back as something inferior, an animal or even a woman, which is a punishment for having led a bad life. Therefore, being born a woman is in itself a punishment, proof that you once led a bad life as a man and you deserve to be punished. Thus Hindu men believe thay have a right to control and punish any woman just for being a woman since she must have formerly been an evil man. QED

That's a pretty sophisticated system for backing up what comes down to bullying and horrible behaviour. So, you get to be as cruel as you like, play top dog, beat and bully everyone in the house, and you get religious backing as well.

Some other faiths are missing a trick here!

Our mystery poster at 16:44 and 16:52 today...is that you Andy ? Your ID has gone missing !
mikey - 16:44 was 'Atlanta', 16;52 was me.
I'd rather be a fleet-footed legendary princess than a large US city.
That's 4 "A"s, please.
