I can see why Corbyn has proposed this, but am not sure it's the right solution.

What are your thoughts?

I don't see why we shouldn't have Women-only trains - after all we already have Virgin trains !

There used to be Ladies Waiting Rooms. If a few carriages were provided on each train it could only be a good thing.
It's a silly idea by a man who is looking for publicity, and I say this as a Labour voter who publically supported Corbyn recently.
sandyroe - "There used to be Ladies Waiting Rooms. If a few carriages were provided on each train it could only be a good thing."

There used to be children up chimneys as well.

Just because something is from the past does not mean it is appropriate now - some things disappear for very good reasons.
usual silly thinking by the left. Rather than introducing proper deterrent punishments for miscreants they seek to avoid the problem by inconveniencing the masses. Standard left wing thinking.
I've been in quiet carriages where people have got on and not paid any notice - even when told.

If i got the train at night and there were a load of leery drunk people (not just men) i would probably like the comparative calmness of a separate carriage but i don't see how it could be policed. whats to stop them coming into the carriage?
Its ludicrous and exactly the sort of idea that makes everyday women's fight for equality just that little bit harder
Can you imagine a half empty women only carriage and standing room only in the rest?
I don't agree with it. Women could become sitting ducks, isolated in their own carriage. Especially as I doubt there will be anyone to police it.

I understand that the new tubes being rolled out don't have carriages, how would that be worked around?

Perhaps we should go the other way, and have train carriages for those (both men and women who don't mind a little bit of sexual harassment?

Corbyn, ready and willing to take The Labour Party into the 1950's
Good Man!
What about instead of segregating on gender basis we take a leaf from the book of French railways where those who wish to do harm are beaten unconcious and tied up?
This has the added bonuses of providing some much needed vigorous exercise and a working knowledge of knots.
I would imagine this would only be applicable on late night trains, when harassment mostly occurs.

Sorry but this would definitely need to be policed. I have got the last train home from the City on many an occasion (affectionately known as the Vomit Comet, for probably obvious reasons) and 99% of passengers are drunk. You would never get women only carriages policed by comment consent when practically every bloke is wasted.

As someone who has had to put up with plenty of hassle from groups of rowdy City boys (ok, when I was a bit younger) I would use a women-only carriage. It's all very well saying men's attitudes should change instead, but that aint happening very soon!

What about people who wish to use train toilets ? At the moment a train toilet is in a particular section of the train, to access it one needs to walk through several coaches to get there. Would this mean there would be a need to have a toilet in every coach ? Rail fares are high enough at the moment, the cost would be astronomical. Let's go all the way & have rail coaches made with complete toilet like lockable compartments so that everybody can be isolated to their hearts delight.
//So just how are the train companies supposed to deal with men walking through a Women Only carriage, in order to get to a cup of tea ? //

oh my, mikey, when did you last travel by train? very few trains today still have buffet counters, they are being replaced by the all conquering catering trolley - which rarely has anything to sell except crisps and cold drinks.
It's only an interim policy. If old Corblimey does become PM, we'll soon find ourselves walking everywhere.
Walking everywhere is pushing it a bit. I've always admire the cycling ethos in Maoist China. While you were journeying you could also be doing a bit for the environment and your health.
//What about people who wish to use train toilets ? //

based on my experience yesterday i would ban the public from using modern on-train toilets because they're too stupid. see that big red button on the wall that says "Emergency Alarm"? do you know what? it doesn't open the doors! what it does do is send an alarm signal all through the train. yesterday on the 1400 from Glasgow, the alarms were set off about 8 times between there and Carlisle......
Corbyn has only floated the idea, and good on him for not kow towing to the PC brigade.

Clearly the idea is not popular, but if not proposed how would we know this?

What should be done of course is what TTT says. Catch, prosecute and punish severely the offenders. But I'm afraid the hand wringing liberal Judiciary wont like that so we are pretty much stuck with the problem until a Government has the guts to kick all the unelected luvvies out of positions where they can dictate their particular style of politics.

Luvvies is very much the wrong word...

Unless you believe the judiciary is governed by Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson.
sp - you are on fire today!!
A cursory examination of the judiciary will reveal that, with fur trimmed robes and wigs, they are far too flamboyant to be mistaken for thesps, sp1814. :-P
