I can see why Corbyn has proposed this, but am not sure it's the right solution.

What are your thoughts?

I don't see why we shouldn't have Women-only trains - after all we already have Virgin trains !

It's not dealing with the root problem though is it? Corbyn may well be the next Labour leader but he's never going to be PM so I won't get my knickers in a knot over his ideas.
Has he told us who would police these carriages?
I think you're underestimating how powerful a job Leader of the Opposition can be. It is their job to put the PM in their place. Many ground-breaking policies have come from the Leader of the Opposition, be they Tory or Labour. It is after all why the other parties barely get a look in.

I was thinking that at first - but then again, I don't think it would need to be policed.

There are already 'quiet carriages' on trains where people are dissuaded from answering mobiles phones. This is policed by common consent.

And I remember the days (way before the Kings Cross fire) where the last tube car was for smokers.

That too was 'policed' by common consent.

I assume this would be the same.
What's to stop people who don't 'consent' climbing aboard these carriages though?
Well Naomi, speaking as a man (I've checked), the fact that there's a carriage full of women will be enough I assure you. :-)
has anyone told him that the design of carriages has changed? quite a few years ago, too.
yeah thank god bring them on

have you eva had a chav yell in your ear that you are a dirty old man ?
and I say things like for chrissakes you are old enough to be my granddaughter ..... ( yeah and they all look like Elsie Tanner )

and listened to what they talk about ? - no footie and no beer .....
No I dont think the idea should go breasts up because of lack of police

we have plenty of rail travelling Bessie Braddocks to knock 'em into - well - a cocked hat or outer space or somewhere
ONE carriage? Today one would need three or four carriages.........Lesbians, man in a woman's body, woman in a man's body, cross dressers...........a special carriage would have to be reserved for heterosexual men.
I shall assume the intent is good but I don't think protecting one gender by barring the other, and allowing the other to get assaulted is really the answer. It sounds like an attempt to look as if one is doing something and merely pushing a problem around.
What about men only trains that would be better
Ruddy daft idea !

Can you imagine the uproar if someone suggested that we have Men-Only carriages ?

I can remember some years ago, when BR tinkered with the idea of making one carriage No Smoking, but this failed utterly, as everybody had to walk through this carriage in order to get to the Buffet Car ! So just how are the train companies supposed to deal with men walking through a Women Only carriage, in order to get to a cup of tea ?

Anyway, where is the demand for this ?

If we could coral all the drunks into one carriage, preferably the one on the end of the train, well, I might be prepared to support that !
The next demand will be reserved carriages for Gays and transgender passengers. Or how about carriages Black passengers only?
I remember when we had steam trains which had some non corridor carriages, once in, that is where one remained until the end of one's journey.

The problem then was, if there was a lone female in the carriage a man would not get into that carriage, simply because there had been numerous cases of some females threatening their innocent fellow male passenger, that unless they handed over some cash they would pull the communication chain and report that the man had assulted them.

My sentiments exactly.
Sounds like another form of apartheid, gender instead of race based.

Well,,,it worked well in South Africa,,,hey wot.

And mine.
Have to laugh at sqad, he makes a good point though. In general what do I think? it's like a return to Victorian values. Women have been striving for equality for years, this smacks a bit of putting us delicate darlings back where we belong.
Anyone can be harrassed on a train.

No visiting clubs, pubs or other men only places. Forget about having a vote, an education a career. Pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen for you girl.

Ps: No need to burn your bra ;-)
