Muslim Can't Be President Apparently

Carson is a highly educated man. It wasn't so long ago that people were saying that about black people, and as a black person, he should really know better than to try to replace one form of prejudice with another.

AOG - "Now what do we have here, Mikey's opposition to a US Republican Party member, that I can understand to a certain extent, taking into consideratio n his left-wing views, but then going on further to criticise this person who happens to be Black, is there no boundaries in his continuous support of the Islamic faith?" I would suggest that the thrust of...

vetuste - "I jumped to a conclusion, Andy. You'll have to forgive me.
For the record, what is your opinion of Carson's comment?"
That's most gracious of you, of course I am happy to let it pass.
As the link stands, it is difficult to extract the exact meaning of Mr Carson's statement because it does appear to be heavily edited, and I would be unsure that some clarification of his remarks has not been edited out before it was broadcast.
The impression I receive from his demeanour, is that his statement about not endorsing the prospect of a Muslim president is based on a pragmatic view of the way the word stands in terms of the U.S. and its on-going conflicts with Muslim extremists.
I also believe that he would be willing to embrace anyone of any faith who will advance America as a nation in terms of opportunities to expand and grow - but that his feeling is that it would be difficult to reconcile the notion of a Muslim president in the current cultural and political climate.
A tough question, with no easy or straightforward answer, and as I said, the straightforwardness of his response may have been compromised by the editing between his observations, and their broadcast.

Clanad...there is no indication in the link that I have posted, that Carson qualified his view that a Muslim person could not be President, for any reason other then religion.
Andy and SP have it right here. I am against prejudice. Until Obama was elected, the very thought of a black man in the White House was unthinkable. Obama proved that wrong...twice.
AOG....I am not supporting the Muslim faith, either here or on any other thread. But I am supporting the right of anybody to have whatever faith they want to follow.
However, its only fair to point out that an atheist has as much chance of gaining the White House as any other non-Christian, of that there is very little doubt.
My point of censure about Carson still stands though...he is prepared to admit to prejudice against Muslims, in a way that would be unthinkable to him if it were directed at black people.
We had a Jewish Prime Minister in the past, if I recall my school history correctly !

Thanks for explaining the difference between the two words, SP. I'll stick with "prejudice" from now on.
'But prejudice is "an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason"...Carson is prejudging a Muslim's ability to lead the U.S. based on a sweeping generalisation.'.
That means, then, that you know not only what the justification was that Carson gave for his statement, but have considered it and determined it to be a sweeping generalisation..
What was the justification and why is it invalid?

You DON'T KNOW what reasons he gave for saying it, Mikey. You seem to have formed "an unfavorable opinion or feeling [of Carson] ... without knowledge, thought, or reason".
It may be Carson is guilty as charged. But you're not explaining why.

/// AOG...I don't have a "Republican" search engine, anymore that you say you don't have a "Muslim"
one ! ///
Perhaps there is no room, since you have enough with your Tory search engine, your UKIP search engine, your Roman Catholic search engine, your Child Abuse search engine, unless of course they happen to be Pakistani, etc, etc.
/// I like to point out injustice and prejudice wherever I see.....as I am sure you do as well....don't you ? ///
The difference being that when I do, I am accused of being Racist or Xenophobic.

It quite plainly indicates why the Republicans are unlikely to gain the White House in 2018.
