From working with people with schizophrenia, it's quite usual for the symptoms to improve with age, particularly in the 70s. Should have googled his age first...

On that basis - all medical diagnosis is 'subjective'.
Obviously it depends on interpretation, but I am sure that years of research and experience leads to some indicators and behavioural patterns that can be common to certain conditions - mental or physical.
